REVS RETURN WITH WIN

The York Revolution kicked off their season-ending seven-game homestand with a big 2-1 victory over the Long Island Ducks on Monday night at PeoplesBank Park, increasing their Freedom Division first place lead to two games over the Lancaster Barnstormers with six games to play.  The game was a makeup contest from a rainout the previous week.  The homestand continues as York welcomes Southern Maryland to town on Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m.

After stranding runners in three of the first four innings, including leaving the bases loaded after three walks in the second, Revs starter Victor Mateo surrendered an unearned run in the fifth. Giovanny Alfonzo singled up the middle with one away, stole second, and Elmer Reyes followed with a walk. Marc Krauss grounded a ball sharply to second base for a potential inning-ending double play, as Alonzo Harris ranged far to his right and threw across his body to get Reyes at second.  Shortstop Ryan Dent’s throw to first was low and got past Telvin Nash as Alfonzo came into score the game’s first run.

The unearned run was all Mateo allowed, taking a no-decision as he struck out five over five innings of work and allowed only two hits, while dodging a season-high five walks.

The Revs quickly tied the game in the bottom of the fifth.  After joining the club earlier in the day, new acquisition Rubi Silva had begun Monday’s game on the bench.  After entering for Dayron Varona in the third after the Revs left fielder injured his thumb on a stolen base attempt. Silva’s first at-bat came in the fifth.  On the very first pitch he saw, Silva launched an opposite field home run to left, tying the score in dramatic fashion at 1-1.  Silva was the first Rev to solve Zac Treece, who in his first start of the season, had faced the minimum through his first 4.1 innings.

The Ducks sent Treece back out for the sixth. Dent led off with a double down the left field line, immediately reaching scoring position as the go-ahead run. Chase Simpson advanced Dent to third on a groundout to the right side, and Harris came through with a base hit through the left side past the drawn-in Ducks infield to put the Revs in front 2-1.

Four Revs relievers each tossed scoreless frames in back of the start from Mateo. Joe Van Meter (3-2) earned the win, posting a scoreless frame for the 27th time in his last 29 appearances. Grant Sides made his Revs debut in the seventh, working around a one-out bloop single, and Ricardo Gomez followed with a 1-2-3 eighth. Chase Huchingson earned his fifth save of the season in the ninth, stranding a leadoff single and picking up a strikeout.

The Revs are back in action Tuesday night at PeoplesBank Park as they welcome the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs for a three-game series. The pitching matchup will feature Daryl Thompson (9-6, 3.70) for Southern Maryland and Frank Gailey (13-9, 4.44) for York. It’s a WellSpan Sports Medicine Silver Slugger Tuesday. For tickets visit yorkrevolution.com, the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office, or call 717-801-HITS.

Darrell Henry and Matt Present will bring you the action beginning at 6:10 p.m. on 1350 WOYK as well as online at woyk1350.com, the WOYK YouTube Channel and on the WOYK App.

NOTES:

Silva became the third York player in team history to homer in his first plate appearance, joining Nate Espy (2007) and Chris Nowak (2011). He joins Nowak as the only two to go yard on the first pitch. He is the eighth Rev all-time to hit a home run in his first game played and first since Nick Ferdinand (2015).
