(July 26, 2022 – York, Pa.): The York Revolution was provided an early spark on Tuesday night but was silenced thereafter, falling 6-1 in 10 innings to the Charleston Dirty Birds to open their series at PeoplesBank Park.
York got on the board one batter into the bottom of the first as JC Encarnacion drove his ninth home run of the year onto the right center field lawn for an early 1-0 lead. It was Encarnacion’s second leadoff home run to start a game this season.
The early lead came against Charleston starter Ryan Lawlor who the Revs chased after just three innings and 71 pitches, making him the third starter in four games that has not made it past the third against the Revs offense.
On the other side, Charleston consistently had runners on early in the game against York starter Alex Sanabia, but through the first four innings the righty stranded seven total to maintain the 1-0 lead.
Charleston attempted to play small ball all night and it finally played to their advantage in the top of the fifth. After Nick Heath reached on a bloop single to lead off the inning and moved to second on a one-out single by Edwin Espinal, the Dirty Birds put on a double steal. On the attempt to throw out Heath at third base, the throw from York catcher Lenin Rodriguez skipped into left field. Heath scored to tie the game at 1-1, but Sanabia struck out the next two to escape further damage.
Over six innings in a no-decision, Sanabia allowed just one unearned run on six hits while striking out eight on the night, tying his Revs career-high.
Lefty Tuck Tucker relieved Sanabia, tossing a scoreless inning with a strikeout to keep the game tied.
York threatened with two baserunners in the bottom half of the seventh as Elmer Reyes was hit by a pitch and Carlos Franco walked. Longtime Revs reliever Ricardo Gomez, making his Dirty Birds debut and 367th career Atlantic League appearance (seven shy of the all-time record) struck out cleanup hitter Telvin Nash swinging to keep the game tied at 1-1.
Nick Howard and Jim Fuller also logged scoreless innings out of the Revs bullpen as the game remained tied through nine, sending the Revs to extras for the second straight game.
Duke von Schamann was again brought on to pitch the top of the 10th and was greeted with back-to-back seeing eye hits including a go-ahead single up the middle by Diego Goris. Yovan Gonzalez reached on a bunt single to load the bases, and von Schamann walked pitcher Kevin Siegrist on a full count offering, extending the Charleston lead, 3-1. Nine-hole hitter Scott Kelly followed with an RBI single up the middle, pushing Charleston ahead 4-1 with still nobody out. Anfernee Seymour continued the barrage with a single of his own, bringing the lead to 5-1 as six batters came to the plate before the first out was finally recorded. After fouling off 11 straight two-strike pitches, Alfredo Gonzalez plated yet another run, this time on a single to left field. Melky Mesa cut down a potential second run at the plate, but the base hit put Charleston ahead 6-1.
Von Schamann (4-3) was relieved by a returning Nick Green who was activated from the Injured List earlier in the day and retired the first batter he faced, Engel Beltre on a ground out to second, but the five runs surrendered in the inning tied the most ever given up by York in an extra inning.
York went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 10th against right-hander Max Tannenbaum, falling to 4-6 on the current homestand with two games remaining.
In total, York stranded 11 on the night and went 0-8 with runners in scoring position while Charleston overcame 14 runners stranded.
York remains 4.5 games back in the North Division second half standings, while Charleston has won a season best six straight, pulling within 4.5 games of first place in the South.
