(July 9, 2022 – Waldorf, Md.): The York Revolution put together a game-tying rally against Atlantic League all-time wins leader Daryl Thompson but were done in by the big inning, falling 7-3 to the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs on Saturday night at Regency Furniture Stadium.
The Blue Crabs put together their first big inning, scoring three times in the second to stake a 3-0 lead. Alex Crosby and Joe DeLuca led off with singles up the middle, and Braxton Lee made it three in-a-row up the middle with a single to plate Crosby. After a sac bunt by Ryan Haug, Michael Baca drove a two-run triple to the gap in right-center.
Thompson retired 11 of his first 12 batters before Nellie Rodriguez kickstarted the comeback with a two-out double to the gap in left-center in the fourth. Carlos Franco worked a walk to extend the inning and JC Encarnacion ripped an RBI single to right to get the Revs on the board.
Lenin Rodriguez launched a solo homer to left in the top of the fifth to bring the Revs within 3-2. Yefri Perez and Elmer Reyes followed with singles, and Melky Mesa tied the game with a base hit up the middle, as four consecutive Revs hits tied the game at 3-3.
Thompson (8-2) allowed just one hit after that, finishing seven innings to earn the 84th win of his Atlantic League career while his offense regained the lead for him an inning later.
Revs starter Austin Nicely (2-7) had settled in, retiring eight of nine batters through the end of the fifth inning, but a leadoff walk to David Harris set the stage in the sixth. With one out, DeLuca grounded a single into left. Encarnacion made a great diving catch on Lee’s liner to left for the second out of the inning, but Haug worked a full count and with the runners in motion, ripped a two-run double down the left field line to put Southern Maryland on top 5-3. Baca greeted reliever Nick Green with an RBI single to right, and Jack Sundberg increased the lead to 7-3 on an RBI triple to deep left-center.
Patrick Baker closed it out for the Blue Crabs, retiring all six in two innings of relief. Together with Thompson, the Crabs set down 14 of York’s final 15 batters following Mesa’s game-tying single in the fifth.
Carlos Ventura tossed scoreless ball in the seventh and eighth out of the Revs bullpen, using a 4-6-3 double play to erase a leadoff walk in both frames. The Revs turned three 4-6-3 double plays on the night.
