(April 29, 2022 – Lancaster, Pa.): The York Revolution returned to Pennsylvania off a 19-1 road win in Kentucky the night before, but this time fell victim to a record-setting output, losing 23-7 to the Lancaster Barnstormers on Friday night in front of 5,614 fans on hand at Clipper Magazine Stadium for Lancaster’s home opener. The 23 runs marked the most allowed in a game in Revs history and the most scored in a game in Barnstormers history.
Lancaster put up a six-spot in the first inning against York starter Austin Nicely (0-2) beginning with an RBI triple from Melvin Mercedes just two batters into the game; RBI doubles were also added by Kelly Dugan and Jake Hoover.
The day for Nicely was cut short after just 2.2 innings, allowing nine earned runs while walking five hitters. Lancaster plated three more in the third by way of a Colton Shaver two-run single and a Dugan fielder’s choice.
Jhoendri Herrera relieved Nicely to finish the third but ran into trouble in the fourth, allowing another four runs kick-started by a second two-run double by Hoover who came into the night hitless on the season. LeDarious Clark and Shaver added RBI singles.
After back to back singles to lead off the top of the fifth, Paul Mondesi and Zach Racusin both scored on a base hit to left field by Nellie Rodriguez, who reached second base when the ball was bobbled by Clark as York got on the board, trailing 13-2.
From the Revs bullpen, it was a tale of two innings for both Carlos Del Rosario, who pitched innings five and six, and Johsson Arias, who threw the seventh and eighth innings.
A scoreless fifth from Del Rosario was followed by a three-run, no-doubt blast to right-center from Dugan in the sixth as the cleanup hitter’s first homer of the year made it 16-2.
A scoreless seventh for Arias was followed with a seven-run eighth for Lancaster, which included another RBI double from Dugan (six RBI), an Andretty Cordero run-scoring infield knock, a two-run single from Anderson Feliz, and a two-run single from Hoover (six RBI). That inning brought Lancaster’s total to a record 23 runs on the night, also the most runs allowed in franchise history by Revs pitching, surpassing the previous record of 19, compiled last season by Long Island (July 23, 2021).
The Revs were able to close the gap ever so slightly in the ninth inning, scoring five runs against reliever Hunter Speer on four walks and three hits, before reliever Josh Graham finally shut the door on the night. Melky Mesa ripped a two-run single while Carlos Castro, Edwin Figuera, and Jack Kenley all received bases loaded walks to drive in the other runs.
Brent Teller (1-1) was phenomenal over five innings for Lancaster, striking out seven while allowing just two runs, with only one being earned. He was followed by a scoreless inning from Oscar De La Cruz and two scoreless from Marc Rzepcynski.
York will look to bounce back Saturday evening when Jorge Martinez (0-0) takes the mound for his second start, where he will be opposed by RHP Nile Ball (0-0).
