GARY, Ind. –  The Gary SouthShore RailCats (40-33) made a late rally to tie the game at 7-7 in the eighth, but it was not enough as the Winnipeg Goldeyes (43-30) scored twice in the ninth to take the series finale, 9-7. The RailCats lost three of the four games in the weekend series against Winnipeg, and end the season series against the Goldeyes with a 4-7 record.

Winnipeg took the opening lead for the fourth straight game on Reggie Abercrombie’s two-out, two-run home run to left field in the first. Andrew Sohn doubled down the right field line in the inning before Abercrombie went deep for the 14th time on the year.

Gary answered with three runs in the second to take their only lead of the game. Kris Goodman got Gary on the board with an RBI single to center, cutting the Goldeyes lead in half. The RailCats tied the game after Jose Gonzalez moved up to third on a wild pitch, however, a throwing error from catcher Tanner DeVinny sailed past third baseman Wes Darvill into third left field, allowing Gonzalez to score. Alex Crosby gave Gary a 3-2 lead with a sacrifice fly to left, bringing in Goodman from third.                                                                                    

The Goldeyes regained the lead with two more two-out runs in the third. DeVinny led off the inning with a walk before Sohn reached on an infield single. David Rohm advanced both baserunners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt before Abercrombie delivered a two-run single to center, plating both DeVinny and Sohn.                                 

Winnipeg increased their lead to two with another run in the fifth. David Bergin and Wes Darvill drew back-to-back walks before Mason Katz scored Bergin with an RBI single into right field.                                                                                         

The score stayed the same until the bottom of the eighth. With one out and nobody on, Crosby and Reggie Wilson singled before Cameron Newell walked to load the bases. After Randy Santiesteban struck out, Frank Martinez, pinch hitting for Jose Gonzalez, hit a bases-clearing double to left-center field, tying the game at 7-7.                                                                                                                                                          

The game did not stay tied for long, Winnipeg’s Katz led off the top of the ninth with a single before Jordan Ebert sacrificed him to second. Sohn then took Drasen Johnson deep to left with a two-run home run, putting the Goldeyes back in front for good.                                                                             

Jesse Pratt (2-3) was responsible for Katz on second base when Sohn hit his home run off Johnson, therefore, Pratt was charged with the loss. Winnipeg’s Victor Cappellan (1-4) pitched only 1/3 of an inning, however, he records the win as he was the last pitcher to pitch before Sohn’s two-run home run. Ryan Chaffee (14) allowed a hit in the ninth, but nothing else to earn his second save of the series.

Gary begins a three-game series vs. the St. Paul Saints on Monday night at 7:10 p.m. Right-hander Aryton Costa (1-1, 6.00) gets the ball for the RailCats in the series opener while the Saints have yet to announce their starter.
