GARY, Ind. – Five innings of two-run ball from Jeff McKenzie and three RBIs from Frank Martinez in the finale of Friday’s two-game set led the Gary SouthShore RailCats to a 6-2 win over the Winnipeg Goldeyes. The win snapped the reigning champions’ three-game winning streak and keeps Gary just two games behind Kansas City for first place in the Wild Card race.                                                                                                                                     

The Goldeyes got on the board in the first inning to take the opening lead for the second straight game. Andrew Sohn led off the game after being hit by a pitch before advancing to second on David Rohm’s walk. Josh Romanski sacrificed the runners into scoring position before Reggie Abercrombie hit an RBI groundout to plate Sohn for the game’s first run.                                                                              

In the bottom of the first, the RailCats answered to take their first lead of the series. Cam Newell started off the offensive surge with a two-out single to center. Randy Santiesteban then doubled to advance Newell to third and they both scored on Martinez’s two-run double. Martinez scored on a throwing error from Winnipeg catcher Tanner Divinny as he tried to retire Martinez on a stolen base attempt.

Gary (40-31) added to its lead in the third. Chase Harris led off the inning by reaching via an error. Newell sacrificed Harris to third and Randy Santiesteban followed with a walk. Martinez drove in his third run of the game on a sacrifice fly to right to score Newell. Santiesteban later stole second and scored on an error from Goldeyes third baseman Wes Darvill to make the score 5-1.                                                                                            

Winnipeg (41-30) cut into the lead in the top of the fourth before recording an out. David Bergin led off the inning with double before scoring on Wes Darvill’s single to cut the deficit to three. Despite, putting runners on the corners later in the inning, the Goldeyes did not score another run in the frame.

The RailCats answered quickly. In the bottom of the fourth, Cole Fabio led off with a double and advanced to third on Willis’ groundout before scoring on Harris’ two-out RBI double into the left field corner.

Martinez drove in three runs for the second straight game, stole a base and scored a run in the victory while Santiesteban extended his personal-best on-base streak to 10 games with a pair of hits. Every Gary starter except one reached base on the night and Fabio recorded his first stolen base and his first two-hit game as a pro.

McKenzie (1-2) recorded the win in his first start for Gary in just over two months after breaking his left fibula in late May. The southpaw yielded just five hits, two walks, hit a batter and struck out in his first career first as a RailCat. Zack Dodson (5-4) went the distance in the loss. The southpaw allowed six runs (three earned) on nine hits, a walk and struck out five in his third start of the year vs. the RailCats.

Gary and Winnipeg continue their four-game series on Saturday night at 6:10 p.m. RailCats southpaw Alex Gunn (6-4, 4.08) faces Goldeyes starter Mikey O’Brien (6-4, 5.61) in game three of the series.
