Duncanville rotated quarterbacks Michael Myers and Jaylin Nelson to a Primetime Sports 7-on-7 varsity division tournament title. Each led Duncanville to a score in a 13-12 championship over Highland Park.

Duncanville hosted the tourney with seven divisions from fifth-grade to varsity. The tourney finalists qualify for the Prime Time state tournament in July in College Station.

Myers is a returning senior for Duncanville and looked at full strength after an injury plagued junior season. Myers passed for nine touchdowns in completing 47-of-84 passes last season for 651 yards. Nelson had a heralded season as a sophomore quarterback at Desoto but transferred a few miles west to Duncanville. The speedy Nelson was pressed into quarterback duty last season when Desoto quarterback Tristen Wallace went out for two months with a broken leg. The 6-4, 220-pound Wallace has offers from around the country, including national champion Ohio State as he returns to DeSoto next season for his senior year.

Nelson led First Baptist to a TAPPS state title as a freshman before playing at Desoto. He’s a major college recruit as a receiver for the Class of 2017, but Nelson has more than just speed. He rushed 954 yards and 18 touchdowns but also passed for 1,888 yards with 18 touchdowns and completing 64 percent of his passes.

Duncanville’s newly hired Reggie Samples watched from behind the end zone as Duncanville went undefeated through four games. Samples takes over at Duncanville after a highly successful run in the Dallas ISD at Skyline and Lincoln. Samples’ son, Rashaad Samples, by the way is being recruited again after RaShaad decided last month to transfer from Oklahoma State. Newly named Houston coach Tom Herman recruited Samples as Ohio State’s offensive coordinator and is highly interested as his new SMU coach Chad Morris. Coach Samples said the process was still underway to determine where Ra’Shaad transfers.

Duncanville competes in a very tough district with DeSoto and two-time defending state champ Cedar Hill as well as a fast-improving South Grand Prairie. Duncanville showed a strong 7-on-7 defense with 2016 defensive back Bailey Phillips, who has committed to Tennessee. Duncanville freshman (Class of 2018) linebacker Marcus Mosley (6-2, 210)also looks like a player who will contribute quickly next season. Duncanville also expects to get offensive production for its two quarterbacks with the addition next season of 2016 trickster Anterius Brown as a receiver.

Samples said it’s too early to determine what will happen at quarterback but is glad to have two good players like Nelson and Myers. Duncanville has its spring practice from April 30-May 28. Joining Samples’ staff at Duncanville from Skyline are offensive coordinator Herman Johnson and defensive coordinator Pete Gee

PrimeTime Update: Highland Park looked good again in the tourney with rising senior quarterback Henry Allen showing the same strong arm he did in leading Highland Park to a second place finish to Mansfield Legacy at the Winter Fest in Plano in January … A mahor player of impact for next season will be versatile, quick receiver/defensive back Joseph Sweeney, who transferred back to HP from Class 3A Scurry-Rosser just east of Dallas … Highland Park won the 9th Grade Division with a 29-19 final over Duncanville Reed … In a very competitive 6th Grade Division, Arlington Seguin defeated Desoto’s DSG Elite, 14-6.
