PrimeTime 7on7 Veteran Shane Buechele Shining at Texas

By: Matt Reese

Shane Buechele became the only true freshman quarterback to start in the first two games of the season in Texas Longhorns history.

Let that sink in.

In the entire existence of the storied Texas program, not a single freshman QB was able to take over a team from the start until Buechele. Though, to many of us in North Texas, this doesn't come as much of a surprise.

Before his historically hot start at UT,  Buechele was tearing up the field at Arlington Lamar. In his three years for the Vikings, Buechele completed 64 percent of his passes (463-719), threw for 6,379 yards and 73 passing touchdowns. He also ran the ball 270 times for 1,741 yards (6.4 ypc) and 19 touchdowns.

Even before that, however, Buechele dominated the PrimeTime 7on7 football scene.

Like many other elite quarterbacks in today's game, Buechele got his start with 7on7 football. The fast-paced, quick-pass offense that is offered in 7on7 directly applies to the West Coast offense that Texas, Baylor and a growing number of collegiate offenses run. Lamar has been a regular on the PrimeTime 7on7 Circuit since the start of the new decade

When he hit the #txhsfb stage at Lamar, Buechele led a high-powered Vikings offense into the playoffs three straight years, scoring at least 35 points per game in each season. Now at Texas, the Longhorns have averaged 45.5 points per game in their first two starts, up from 22.5 last season.

Individually, Buechele is eighth in the country in QB passer rating, ahead of Heisman candidates like Deshaun Watson and JT Barrett. He also ranks in the Top 20 (13th) in completion percentage at 71.1 percent, which is a full 10 points better than Longhorn legend Colt McCoy in his first two starts as a redshirt freshman.

This certainly has to do with the offensive scheme put in place by offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert, but Buechele's execution comes from years of experience playing in the same scheme during 7on7 tournaments.

The game of football has changed. More and more we will see stories, like Shane Buechele's, of young quarterbacks honing their skills in the fast-paced 7on7 world, then moving on to the high school and collegiate levels and excelling as a passer.

Now it's up to the defenses to catch up.
