PrimeTime Alums Help Westlake to 7on7 TitleBy: Matt Reese Austin Westlake capped off the Adidas 7on7 Texas State Tournament in College Station with two exciting wins in the semifinal and finals to take the varsity crown. First, the Chaps took down local rival Lake Travis in the semis with a 33-32 victory. Down six with only seconds to play, Westlake punched in a TD with no time remaining on the clock, and went on to convert the extra point to claim their spot in the final. Houston-based Manvel was up next, featuring some of the top players in the state of Texas, and the nation. After taking a nine point lead to half, Westlake couldn’t hold on to the championship in regulation time, which ended in a 34-34 tie. Neither team scored in the 1st OT, but the Chaps were able to score, and convert a two-point try to take a 42-34 lead in the 2nd OT period. Now all they needed was a stop. Senior Bryce Boisvert came through with an interception that sealed the deal, and gave Westlake the 2015 State Championship. The Chaps’ success should not come as a surprise to much of the 7on7 community. They’ve been at it for years. Westlake’s core of the 2015 Championship team are PrimeTime veterans. Of the 17 players on the roster, 16 have played in PrimeTime tournaments. Four (Noah Hodes, Mack Kelley, Max Mangum, Ryan Rees) have played together since the 6th grade. Four (Boisvert, Mangum, Hodes and Chase Cokley) of the roster were part of the JV Division team that rolled through the 2013 PrimeTime Tournament of Champions, claiming the TOC title. Their experience in PrimeTime tournaments prepared the Chaps for the pressure of the Adidas 7on7 State Tournament. With no coach — varsity, parent or volunteer — all the play-calling on offense and defense fell on the players. No matter. QB Sam Ehlinger took over the offense while Mangum and Kelley were the defensive minds. Ehlinger and Mangum, along with Hodes and Cokely were named to the 2013 PrimeTime All-State team. In Texas, football is King, and the Westlake Chaps are wearing the crown with the help of some PrimeTime alums. PrimeTime aims to bring the best competition execution and safety to the growing world of 7on7 football. For more information about PrimeTime football events and schedules, visit the Football Page |
