Tournament of Champions Recap

By: PTS

Primetime Sports' Tournament of Champions commenced June 27 at Veterans Park and Athletic Complex in College Station with a wide variety of teams from across Texas.

The tournament brings youth 7-on-7 football teams from all corners of the state to compete for trophies and bragging rights.

Teams as young as fourth grade are included in the tournament as well as a few junior varsity and varsity teams.

Most of the action for Houston seemed to be in the eighth through ninth grade brackets and even on levels much younger.

Heading into Sunday's final rounds of play, Cy Ranch and Cypress (Card) impressed in the eighth grade bracket. Both teams ended up in Sunday's championship bracket after solid play in pool play but also extended its stay for a semifinal meeting.

Cypress (Card) defeated Lake Travis (Janecek), 26-8 in the first round of the championship bracket and followed it with a 32-20 win over Midlothian Corbin.

It set up a meeting with Cy Ranch's team, which knocked off The Woodlands - another top-notch Houston squad - in a 27-26 thriller and then defeated J.J Pearce, 33-27.

After a 38-20 win, Cy Ranch faced Aledo in a showdown against Dallas for the eighth-grade title. Aledo prevailed 42-32.

Some other notes include Seven Lakes on the ninth grade bracket. The Spartans topped Spring Branch, 40-25 and Lovejoy, 32-27 for a spot in the semifinals. Seven Lakes is one of the few Houston teams that hadn't lost a game up until that point, including wins over Aledo and Lake Highlands in pool play.

Speaking of team without a loss, the Katy Sun Devils won the seventh grade bracket, defeating CTX Elite Red, 37-19. The team finished the weekend 5-0.

Seven Lakes made it to the semifinals of the ninth grade championship bracket, falling to College Station, 34-21. Seven Lakes did get wins over Aledo and Lake Highlands in pool play.

Going a bit younger, Katy had a representative in the sixth grade championship bracket. That team made the semifinals after wins over Arlington Seguin, Lake Travis (Morford) and Leopards-Barr in pool play and more over College Station and Texas Thunder in the championship bracket.

The Katy All-Stars had a team in the championship bracket in the fifth grade division, but that team fell to the Highland Park Cowboys, 26-20 in the quarterfinals.

The youngest of them all walked away with a second-place trophy, too. The Katy Cowboys fell to the Ducks in the fourth grade championship game, 31-19.
