CLEBURNE, Texas (May 31, 2019) – St. Paul Saints right-hander Eddie Medina threw the first no-hitter against the Cleburne Railroaders in franchise history on Friday night at The Depot, helping the Saints to a 5-0 win.

It was the sixth no-hitter in American Association history and the first since Matt Sergey handcuffed the Texas AirHogs on July 27, 2017. Joe Miller threw the only other no-hitter in Saints franchise history on August 25, 1996 against Thunder Bay.

The Railroaders (8-7) only managed three baserunners, as John Nester reached on a dropped third strike in the bottom of the third, then Logan Trowbridge was then hit by a pitch. Trowbridge later walked in the bottom of the eighth. Medina threw 107 pitches, 66 for strikes.

Most of St. Paul’s offense came early against Cleburne starter Charlie Gillies (1-2). The Saints (9-5) grabbed two runs in the second on three singles and an error, with RBI from Blake Schmit and Joey Wong on a squeeze bunt. A Burt Reynolds RBI single in the third made it 3-0.

Gillies righted the ship after that, at one point retiring 11 consecutive hitters before running into more trouble in the seventh. Schmit led off the inning with a walk, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and a groundout, then came in to score on a two-out infield single from Josh Allen.

Reynolds capped the scoring in the top of the eighth with a solo home run to produce the game’s final margin.

The Railroaders and Saints continue their series on Saturday night, with first pitch scheduled for 7:06 PM. Right-hander Jesus Sanchez (1-2, 6.50) gets the ball for Cleburne, while the Saints will counter with fellow righty Dustin Crenshaw (1-0, 5.40).
