Shorthanded Roaders Fall Short in Opener05/20/2019 9:40 PM Article By: CLEBURNE, Texas (May 20, 2019) – Playing without three starting position players due to injury, the Cleburne Railroaders committed six errors and fell to the Winnipeg Goldeyes 8-7 on Monday night at The Depot. John Nester, Levi Scott, and Angel Rosa were all ruled out prior to the game, forcing manager Brent Clevlen to start pitcher Michael Gunn at designated hitter and shuffle around his normal defensive alignment. Despite the changes, Cleburne (3-2) jumped out to a 4-0 lead through three innings of play courtesy of a two-run home run from Chase Simpson and a two-run single from Logan Trowbridge. The lead would not last, however, as Winnipeg (4-1) scored six times in the top of the fourth inning against Cleburne starter Charlie Gillies (0-1). Three of the six runs were unearned, as Cleburne committed three errors in the inning. Another unearned run crossed for Winnipeg in the top of the sixth, but the Railroaders answered on a solo home run from Kenny Meimerstorf that trimmed the Winnipeg lead to 7-5. The Railroaders committed their sixth error of the night in the top of the eighth, opening the door for another unearned run to cross the plate. That insurance run proved pivotal, as Simpson smacked his second two-run homer of the night in the bottom of the ninth to trim the deficit to 8-7. Victor Capellan recovered to induce a groundout from Jared Reaves, ending the game and securing his second save of the season. Brandon Bingel (1-0) picked up the win for Winnipeg, working two innings in relief while allowing one run. The Cleburne bullpen pitched well, as rookies Edward Cruz, Jeremy Smith, and Braden Pearson allowed just one unearned run over three innings of work while recording four strikeouts. The Railroaders and Goldeyes continue the series on Tuesday night, Jesus Sanchez (1-0, 0.00) takes the ball for Cleburne, while the Goldeyes will counter with lefty Kevin McGovern (1-0, 1.29).
