RAILROADERS LOSE TO X’S IN OPENER
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 23, 2018
SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Alex Polston doubled and scored, but Cleburne had just five hits and three infield singles in a 6-1 loss to the Sioux City Explorers in the series opener of the four-game set at Mercy Field on Monday night.
Polston’s double was his first extra-base hit since June 4th and he later scored on K.C. Huth’s sacrifice fly to halve the deficit to 2-1 in the 5th inning.
The Explorers responded by sending nine to the plate and scoring four times against Cleburne starter Jared Mortensen in the bottom of the 5th. Daniel Jackson clubbed the first of his two triples to drive in a run, and Michael Lang, Jose Sermo and Dexture McCall followed suit with run-scoring hits to end Mortensen’s night.
Mortensen lasted a season-low 4.2 innings and gave up six runs on eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts. The Cleburne bullpen combined for 3.1 scoreless frames, with Roman Gomez turning in 1.1 innings and Patrick Young tossing two clean innings.
Sioux City jumped on the board in the 1st inning when Jay Baum drove in his league-leading 52nd run with an RBI single and the X’s later executed a double-steal to score a second run in the inning.
Explorers starter Taylor Jordan surrendered just one unearned run on four hits with three walks and eight strikeouts over 6.2 innings. Ryan Flores gave up a hit over 1.1 innings of relief before newly-acquired reliever Dom Topoozian went 1-2-3 in his Explorers debut in the 9th.
Cleburne is now 5-22 away from home and has lost four consecutive games after winning the first game of a season-long eight game roadtrip.
The series continues on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. Cleburne will send RHP Josh Hodges to the mound, and the Explorers have not yet announced their Game 2 starter.
Cleburne returns home on July 27th with a doubleheader against the Gary SouthShore RailCats. Tickets and all promo info are available at www.railroaderbaseball.com or by calling (817) 945-8705. |
