CLEBURNE, Texas – The Cleburne Railroaders have acquired INF Chase Simpson from the Lincoln Saltdogs in exchange for RHP Cortland Cox.
Simpson, 26, is a native of Dallas and attended Flower Mound HS in Flower Mound, Texas. The switch-hitter is slashing .277/.406/.511 with six homers and 22 RBI in 41 games this season.
Simpson attended both the University of Oklahoma and Wichita State University before he was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 14th round of the 2014 MLB Draft. In 299 games of affiliated baseball, Simpson posted a .242/.335/.410 line with 30 homers and 159 RBI.
The Railroaders are sending reliever Cortland Cox to the Lincoln Saltdogs to complete the deal. Through the club’s first two years of play, Cox remains the one player to have his contract purchased by a Major League organization – when the Angels picked him up in February of 2018.
In his Railroaders career, Cox is 7-2 with a 3.49 ERA in 53 relief appearances. Last season, Cox went 4-2 with a 2.96 ERA and 66 strikeouts in 51.2 innings of work.
This season, Cox is 3-0 with a 5.00 ERA in 16 appearances., surrendering 10 earned runs on 25 hits in 18 innings.
The Railroaders also made a pair of other roster moves, activating INF Rafael Palmeiro from the disabled list and placing INF Alex Polston on the DL retroactive to July 2.
