CLEBURNE, Texas – The Cleburne Railroaders have announced that OF Axel Johnson and RHP Dylan Mouzakes will return to the club in 2018.
Johnson developed into a mainstay in the Cleburne lineup towards the end of the 2017 season, and Mouzakes played an important role in solidifying one of the league’s best pitching rotations last year.
Johnson started the year as a two-way player, appearing in a handful of games as a pitcher early on, but quickly became one of Cleburne’s most important position players, hitting .251 with two homers and 26 RBI over 87 games last season. A former TCU Horned Frog, Johnson notched 10 doubles and stole 12 bases.
“Axel was a key part to our success last year,” pitching coach Ed Pruitt said. “The value that Axel gives us is he can play multiple roles for us. We can utilize him in the field at first base, in the outfield and even on the mound. We are looking forward to seeing what Axel will bring to the table this year.”
Mouzakes, after spending 2016 and the first few weeks of 2017 with Fargo-Moorhead, went 5-6 with a 4.39 ERA in 13 starts and 17 total appearances with the Railroaders last season. He struck out 71 batters and walked 37 over 82.0 innings, providing depth to a pitching staff that finished fourth in the league with a 3.96 team ERA a year ago.
“We are definitely pleased to have Dylan come back and be a part of the pitching staff this year,” Pruitt said. “We are looking forward to having his leadership and confidence every time he takes the mound. Dylan will be a great contribution to this year’s team.”
The announcement comes a day after the Railroaders announced that all-star RHP Patrick Mincey will be back for 2018.
The Railroaders open their second season with a three-game series against the two-time defending champion Winnipeg Goldeyes May 18 at The Depot. Season, half-season and 10-game flex tickets are on sale now, and single-game tickets will go on sale April 1.
