CLEBURNE, Texas.

On a night that saw Tris Speaker’s jersey retired, the Cleburne Railroaders beat the Winnipeg Goldeyes 4-3, giving the Roaders their first win of their inaugural season.

The scoring tonight didn’t get going until the third inning, when, with two outs, Josh Romanski and David Bergin hit back-to-back singles, putting runners on first and third for Reggie Abercrombie.

Romanski scored on a passed ball, and on the next pitch Abercrombie singled to drive in Bergin.

The Railroaders would tie the game at two in the bottom of the inning, when, with runners on second and third, Nick van Stratten came up with a two run single.

Over the next few innings both teams would add a run. One in the fourth for the Roaders, and one in the sixth for the Goldeyes.

The teams remained tied until the ninth inning when the Railroaders got their break. The reliever Matthews started the inning by hitting Huth and walking Polston, forcing the Goldeyes manager Rick Forney, to bring in Joel Efferetz. Effertz promptly hit Gonzalez. With the bases loaded Mitch Glasser floated the first pitch he saw into right center, sending Huth home and giving the Railroaders a walk-off win.

Matthews suffered the loss tonight, while Abreu earned the win with a scoreless ninth.

Tomorrow the Railroaders will look to split the four game series with the Goldeyes. First pitch at The Depot will be 2:05 p.m. CT.
