Historic UFC 205 Updated Main Card Preview

The countdown is on!

(Long Island, NY., November 2, 2016) – You now only need two hands to count to the most anticipated six-fight main card for UFC 205 in New York City.

The six-fight main card held at Madison Square Garden on November 12 is arguably the most highly regarded and anticipated fight card in the organization’s history.

Six fights that are absolutely piled with talent, flair, and flamboyance will more than likely set a record for the most watched event in UFC history. The card is highlighted by an incredibly huge “super fight” between two current champions of their respective weight classes. Lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez will look to defend his title against current featherweight champion Conor McGregor for the lightweight championship. McGregor will look to become the first UFC fighter to hold two belts in two different weight classes at the same time.

Alvarez, who won the lightweight title back in July by beating Rafael Dos Anjos via first round TKO, will be defending his belt for this first time. McGregor, who won the featherweight belt last December by knocking out Jose Aldo in 13 seconds has since gone on to face Nate Diaz twice at the welterweight division. With history on the line in this headlining fight; UFC 205 will no doubt end with a bang.

The main event is not the only title fight on this super card as Tyrone Woodley will look to defend his welterweight belt against Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson. Meanwhile, in a clash between two Polish women, Joanna Jedrzejczyk will face off against her countrywoman, Karolina Kowalkiewicz for the strawweight belt.

Also featured on the main card is Long Island’s Chris Weidman, the former middleweight champion, who is scheduled to fight Yoel Romero. Weidman (13-1), born and raised on Long Island, has been looking forward to getting back into the Octagon after suffering a neck injury. The two-time Division 1 All-American wrestler at Hofstra University started his professional mixed martial arts career at 13-0 before dropping his only bout to Luke Rockhold at UFC 194.

With impressive victories over Victor Belfort (UFC 187), Lyoto Machida (UFC 175) and two against Anderson Silva, (UFC 162 and UFC 168), Weidman will face another tough opponent in Romero as he looks to reclaim the belt he once wore.

Romero (11-1) will be coming off a six month USADA suspension, which was shortened from two years to six months. The Miami resident hasn’t fought since UFC 194, the same card as Weidman and looks to continue his success after defeating Ronaldo Souza via split decision to earn his seventh consecutive victory, including five via knockout.

The winner of this middleweight fight is likely to get a title shot against the winner of UFC 204 middleweight’s championship winner, Michael Bisping. You can watch Chris Weidman’s longtime trainer, Ray Longo, who sat down with MMA Long Island Magazine for an exclusive interview, talk about this fight by clicking here.

Also on the card is popular UFC veteran, Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone, who is currently riding a three-fight winning streak in the welterweight division. He will take on Kelvin Gastelum in a welterweight showdown.

To accentuate how stacked the main card is, the UFC has former champion Miesha Tate taking on the dangerous Raquel Pennington. This fight will kick-off the six-fight main card at 10pm on November 12 at the iconic Madison Square Garden.

With plenty of UFC fights on the docket until November 12, there is no question that the anticipation for UFC 205 will build as we get closer and closer every day, just look at the main card. Talk about a Pay-Per-View event that certainly will grab the attention of the MMA world. 10 more days.
