Villante Falls To Legend In Brazil

Villante losses tough one

(Fortaleza, Brazil., March 13, 2017) – Long Island’s Gian Villante took a tough loss as Mauricio “Shogun” Rua defeated him in a light heavyweight bout at UFC Fight Night 106 in Brazil on Saturday.

With the two hard-hitting fighters coming off of wins, it was the Brazilian legend, Rua, who secured the TKO win at the 0.59 mark of round three.

Villante (15-8) was coming off a “Fight of the Night” bonus victory after a second-round TKO over Saparbek Safarov in Albany on December 9, 2016.

Looking to win back-to-back bouts, Villante came into a hostile environment, fighting one of the best ever to set foot in the Octagon.

After two rounds that saw plenty of action, with Villante getting knocked to the floor, Villante weathered the storm to enter round three in a razor tight fight.

However, within the first minute, Rua (25-10) pressed forward and immediately connected with a hard right that wobbled Villante. He then went to the body and pressed forward again railing off shots until Villante dropped and the fight was called.

The fight card was headlined by Victor Belfort vs. Kelvin Gastelum, in a middleweight bout.  Another legend from Brazil, Belfort, didn’t fare as well as Rua as he lost via TKO to Gastelum at the 3:52 mark of round one.
