MANCHESTER, NH – Derek Forbort scored two goals, the first multi-goal game of his pro career, lifting the Monarchs to a 5-2 win over Providence on Mullets in Movember Night at the Verizon Wireless Arena.
Going into Saturday night’s game, Providence (7-6-1-0) trailed Manchester (9-4-0-0) by one point in the standings.
Alexander Khokhlachev set up Bruins defenseman Bryce Aneloski at the top of the blue line for a snap shot that made its way past J.F. Berube for a 1-0 lead in the first period.
Providence extended its lead to two goals halfway into the first when right winger David Pastrnak scored from the top left faceoff circle at 12:15.
“We didn’t need to change anything,” Coach Stothers said about his team digging a two-goal deficit. “Just stick to the game plan, leave it as we have and just keep chipping away. I think the biggest thing is you can’t get caught up in the emotions of wins and losses, the bad things that happen on the ice, and the good things that happen.”
Justin Auger poked home a loose puck in the slot to cut the lead to 2-1 at 17:00 in the first period.
Forbort tied the score at 2-2 when he scored his first goal of the year on a put-back right in front of the Bruins net at 17:18 in the second.
Forbort then tallied the game-winner just over a minute later when he scored from the blue line at 18:37 in the second to make it 3-2.
Nick Shore would make it 4-2 after a turnover in the Bruins end at 15:55 in the third. He was assisted by Auger who collected the turn over and centered the pass from the right side to Shore who was waiting for it with a one-time slap shot to the back of the net.
Vincent LoVerde scored his second goal of the season at 17:52 in the third to cap off the scoring.
The Monarchs close out the weekend with a 3 p.m. game at Hartford tomorrow. They return to the Verizon Wireless Arena on Wednesday for a 10 a.m. against Worcester on Education Day.
Notes:
- The Monarchs have won four straight and six out of seven in the month of November.
- Justin Auger has tallied at least one point in three straight games, posting six points total in that time (2 goals, 4 assists).
- Manchester scored five unanswered goals tonight.
- Vincent LoVerde was a team-high plus-4 on the night.
