The University of Dayton track & field team kicked off its 2008-2009 season at the Findlay Oiler Open this weekend. The meet, which started on Friday evening, saw four indoor school records broken as 27 Flyers grabbed top-ten finishes and three more took individual titles.
<P>Senior <A HREF="http://daytonflyers.cstv.com/sports/w-track/mtt/chew_stacy00.html" >Stacy Chew</a> took the women's 300 meter dash with a time of 42.05, which broke the previous record held by sophomore <A HREF="http://daytonflyers.cstv.com/sports/w-track/mtt/cattran_ashley00.html" >Ashley Cattran</a>. Cattran, coincidentally, won the 800 meter race also in a school record time of 2:15.55.
<P>In the field events, sophomore <A HREF="http://daytonflyers.cstv.com/sports/w-track/mtt/maske_tiffany00.html" >Tiffany Maske</a> tied atop the standings for the high jump (5-06.00). Flyer records also fell in the weight throw and pole vault competitions. Freshman Courtney Siebenaller vaulted to third position with her new record (11-11.75) and sophomore <A HREF="http://daytonflyers.cstv.com/sports/w-track/mtt/barnes_mallory00.html" >Mallory Barnes</a> set a new mark by two feet in the weight throw.
<P>Following Maske's top finish, junior <A HREF="http://daytonflyers.cstv.com/sports/w-track/mtt/devault_katie00.html" >Katie DeVault</a> placed seventh overall (10-06.00) in the high jump, while sophomore <A HREF="http://daytonflyers.cstv.com/sports/w-track/mtt/strickland_pembroke00.html" >Pembroke Strickland</a> was tenth with a leap of 10-00.00.
<P>Another two UD athletes cracked the top five in the weight throw. Barnes placed third with a record hurl of 58-06.50 and junior <A HREF="http://daytonflyers.cstv.com/sports/w-track/mtt/mccarty_molly00.html" >Molly McCarty</a> (52-06.75) was fifth overall.
<P>With action resuming on Saturday afternoon, the Flyers continued their success in the field events. Shot putter <A HREF="http://daytonflyers.cstv.com/sports/w-track/mtt/zaccari_johnna00.html" >Johnna Zaccari</a>, a sophomore, claimed second with her toss of 45-09.25. McCarty, who also placed in the weight throw, seized seventh in the event (42-08.25).
<P>Long jumper <A HREF="http://daytonflyers.cstv.com/sports/w-track/mtt/funk_andrea00.html" >Andrea Funk</a> placed seventh overall (16-08.75), while the high jumpers took five of the top ten spots.
<P>The Flyers were led by Maske's top finish, but senior <A HREF="http://daytonflyers.cstv.com/sports/w-track/mtt/kremer_amy00.html" >Amy Kremer</a> was close behind and followed in fourth with a height of 5-04.25. Sophomore <A HREF="http://daytonflyers.cstv.com/sports/w-track/mtt/fougerousse_lauryn00.html" >Lauryn Fougerousse</a> came in next with a sixth place leap of 5-02.25. After that, two juniors, <A HREF="http://daytonflyers.cstv.com/sports/w-track/mtt/steinmetz_emma00.html" >Emma Steinmetz</a> and <A HREF="http://daytonflyers.cstv.com/sports/w-track/mtt/krizmanic_emily00.html" >Emily Krizmanic</a>, claimed eighth and ninth with equal results (4-10.25).
<P>Back on the track, the Flyers dominated the 60 meter finals by placing six runners in the top ten. Junior <A HREF="http://daytonflyers.cstv.com/sports/w-track/mtt/thomas_brittany00.html" >Brittany Thomas</a> highlighted the group with her 7.71 second place time, but was followed in hot pursuit by classmate <A HREF="http://daytonflyers.cstv.com/sports/w-track/mtt/mccormick_lauren00.html" >Lauren McCormick</a> (7.75), who took third. In fifth place was junior <A HREF="http://daytonflyers.cstv.com/sports/w-track/mtt/obrien_lauren00.html" >Lauren O'Brien</a> (7.88), who also ran for third in the 200 meter dash. Newcomer <A HREF="http://onlyfans.cstv.com/schools/dayt/sports/w-track/mtt/muskat_kate00.html" >Kate Muskat</a> finished right behind O'Brien in 7.89 to take sixth overall, while sophomore Sam English (8.02) and junior <A HREF="http://daytonflyers.cstv.com/sports/w-track/mtt/krizmanic_emily00.html" >Emily Krizmanic</a> (8.03) were ninth and tenth, respectively.
<P>Dayton also got three top-ten times in the 200 meter dash, from O'Brien, McCormick, and freshman <A HREF="http://daytonflyers.cstv.com/sports/w-track/mtt/muskat_kate00.html" >Kate Muskat</a>, and another in the 60 meter hurdles, where senior <A HREF="http://daytonflyers.cstv.com/sports/w-track/mtt/cornell_andrea00.html" >Andrea Cornell</a> finished ninth overall (9.41).
<P>Chew took the title and school record in the 300 meter, but had freshman <A HREF="http://daytonflyers.cstv.com/sports/w-track/mtt/weber_rachel00.html" >Rachel Weber</a> right on her tail. Weber was the runner-up with the school's second best time of 42.27 in her collegiate debut.
<P>Junior <A HREF="http://daytonflyers.cstv.com/sports/w-track/mtt/howley_sarah00.html" >Sarah Howley</a> also posted a time of 1:01.00 to place ninth in the 400 meter race, where the 4x400 relay squad also had a good first outing. The quartet logged a time of 4:02.44 and claimed third overall.
<P>UD will now have a considerable amount of time off before its next meet, the Indiana Open, on Jan. 10 in Bloomington, Ind. |
