The annual alumni traditions continued on Friday of Symposium weekend. The morning was kicked-off with the annual golf scramble, followed by a new event, the Women in Sports Networking Event, and closing with BBQ dinner and poker tournament.
The golf outing kicked-off bright and early with Patrick Skahan (’10) and Dusty Kilgour (’05) explaining the rules of the scramble. Teams of five teed off around the course, mixing current students and alumni for the chance to interact and enjoy the beautiful weather. Each team had a string marshal with 18 feet of string to use at the team’s discretion. Current students manned the grill for the day throughout the tournament.
“We may not have been the best golfers on the course, but our group had a great day," said Jessie Lamb (’10), whose team finished 14 under on the day. "You have to love the string!”
The winning team included Colin Flannery (’01), Jason Golden (’01), Brian Billips (’01) teamed with current students Jorge Quinones (’10) and Mike Rose (’10) who finished the day 24 under.
All in all, the golf outing was a great success. A special thanks goes out to all the alumni who kindly donating to the prizes for the event.
After regrouping from the morning golf festivities, the women of Sports Ad program spent some time together before the BBQ dinner kicked off, bringing back the Women in Sports Networking Event. The women met at the golf and tennis center for some informal time to enjoy each other’s company and talk about being a female in the sport industry. Everyone bragged about some of the great things that they have accomplished recently either in their professional or personal lives. After the large group activity, the women broke for refreshments and smaller discussions.
“I thought the Women in Sports Networking Event was a great opportunity to have more one on one time with the females from the program," said Janice Matacic (’11). "It was a nice open forum for us to share all our own stories, struggles, and accomplishments as women pursuing careers in the industry.”
Following the Women’s event, alumni started filtering into the golf and tennis center for the BBQ dinner and poker tournament. Current students both played poker and served as card dealers for the evening. Mike Fisher (‘97) was crowed the 2010 Poker Champion, beating out Peter Berman (’08) and Dr. Ming Li.
Overall, Friday was filled with fun and fellowship with current students and alumni. A special thanks goes out to all the alumni who came back and participated in the weekend’s festivities. The countdown begins for Symposium weekend 2011!
