A Day in the Life of...

By Christina Wright ('10)

Many professionals in the sports industry will tell you that one of the reasons they love their job is because no day is exactly the same. Whether you are part of the Ohio University sports administration family or just curious about the MBA/MSA program, you can join the Center for Sports Administration and follow the not-so-typical days of our graduate students. This edition features MBA/MSA students Kevin Anderson ('10), Solar Hong ('10), Shelly Jia ('10), and Ben Wang ('11).

A Day in the Life of Kevin Anderson ('10)

6:45 AM Wake up and get ready for the day
7:15 AM Breakfast
7:20 AM Attempt to warm up car but for whatever reason car will not produce any heat; sweep snow off the car
8:00 AM Meet with “Special Problems” team to organize our plan of attack for the upcoming quarter
10:00 AM Off to Copeland to fulfill GA hours in the College of Business
12:00 PM Lunch at my desk as I busily reconcile financial transactions; leftover chicken and rice from the night before
2:00 PM Head home for a little break before class; still no heat in the car
2:30 PM Google “heating problem in car” and discover that a faulty thermostat is the likely culprit for my problems; spend the next hour watching videos on how to change a thermostat
3:30 PM Discover that Saturn has placed my thermostat in an impossible-to-access location
4:00 PM Help my wife tidy up the house
4:30 PM Play with my daughter out in the snow
5:50 PM Return to campus for Dr. Higgins’ class
6:05 PM Realize that Dr. Higgins starts his class before the appointed time given on the schedule; however, I was not the last one there and, therefore, not late
8:00 PM Pizza Hut
9:00 PM Return home
9:30 PM Put daughter to bed

A Day in the Life of Solar Hong ('10)
12:00 AM Continued preparing for the research final exam; struggled to stay awake for almost an hour and a half
1:30 AM Started to prepare for my Revenue Generation presentation
3:00 AM  Couldn’t keep awake anymore, so decided to go to bed
6:45 AM Got up and drove to campus early to secure a parking space
7:45 AM Purchased hot tea
8:10 AM Attended Dr. Pfahl's Sports and Consumers class and turned in my final paper
10:10 AM Prepared for Dr. Li's Research final exam and my revenue generation presentation
11:30 AM Got lunch before the Research final exam
12:00 PM Took the Research final exam
2:30 PM Revenue Generation Project Final Presentation. The large group was divided into two smaller groups. Being in the second group, I had more time to practice the presentation and finally managed to shorten the presentation from 12mins to 9mins and 47 seconds. Besides, our group won the creative award.
6:00 PM  Rushed back home to change for the MSA Thanksgiving dinner and brought my Tigger the Tiger for the second-year skit
6:30 PM Arrived at the Baker Center, practiced the Thanksgiving skit with Shelly Jia ('10)
8:30 PM Rushed to attend the CSSA(Chinese Students and Scholars Association) Executive Board meeting about the 2010 Chinese Spring Festival Performance
11:30 PM Meeting ended. Headed to the theater with my friend, and got the tickets for the New Moon that would be on at 2:15 AM showing. It was a great way to celebrate the end of the fall quarter!

A Day in the Life of Shelly Jia ('10)
4:00 AM Woke up, made a large pot of milk, and started packing for the Winter Baseball Conference trip in Indianapolis, Indiana
5:00 AM Got everything ready. Ben Wang ('10) came to my apartment and gave me a ride to Dr. Higgins’ house.
5:10 AM Dr. Higgins and wife Shirley invited us to have a quick look around their nice house (I loved the fancy doll room). Shirley gave Wang a lot of fresh cookies and bread, which of course made hungry me really jealous.
5:30 AM Head to the Indianapolis!
6:30AM Stopped at McDonald's for breakfast.
7:00 AM Back on the road to Indianapolis! Had a great conversation with Shirley, talking about music, their visit to China, and other stories.
10:00 AM Whoops! Trying our best to find Interstate 70. It was my first time to use my mobile phone as a GPS. We made it at last!
12:30 PM Bryan Emerson ('10), Justin Hunt ('10), Paul Kruger ('10), and Sean Phifer ('10) all arrived. Attended the Winter Baseball Conference Opening Ceremony.
2:00 PM Kruger gave me a ride from the Hilton back to our hotel, and the guys gave me ten minutes to have a quick shower and to change the clothes. Tough!
3:00 PM Head to the Convention Center again to join the Baseball Trade Show. I met and talked with Mr. Kahler, Dr. Higgins, Shirley and several other OHIO alumni. Great networking!
7:00 PM Baseball Trade Show was over. It’s the time to find a local restaurant. I'm starving!
7:30 PM I chose to go with Hunt and Emerson because the other guys plans confused me. We decided to have our meal in a local bar while watching the football games. I taught Hunt and Emerson some Chinese slang. Hope they still remember!
9:00 PM Back to the hotel! Had a good conversation with "Baseball Professor" Emerson.
12:00 PM One last phone call before I went to bed. Zzzzzzzzzz.

A Day in the Life of Ben Wang ('11)
7:00 AM First alarm.
7:15 AM Second alarm.
7:30 AM Woken up by the third alarm. Got up and reminded myself that I got a lot things to do today.
8:00 AM Arrived at GVS, signed in, and started to work! Felt like that I couldn't make it without a big bottle of Mountain Dew.
9:00 AM Met project manager and discussed final recommendations for the client.
11:30 AM Started the final statistics class during winter intersession. I really believe that the regression data analysis is the most practical, useful thing that I learned in all statistics classes. I like regression!
2:00 PM Peer evaluation of GVS projects. Chat with Matt DeLawder ('11) and Claire Surratt ('11) about ski and snowshoe resort in West Virginia.
3:00 PM Return home, ate some dumplings, watched ESPN and Fox Soccer Channel.
4:30 PM Printed out some materials for statistics class, continue to prepare for the stats exam tomorrow. Pretty happy because the pure two-week break is coming with the weekend.
5:15 PM Arrived at the Convocation Center, started my usher duties at the men's basketball game. Go Bobcats!
10:00 PM Bobcats defeated Illinois State, very happy!
12:00 PM Studied stats for a while, then head to bed. Final GVS evaluation and stats exam tomorrow.
