Community service has become an integral part of the MBA/MSA program at Ohio University. Raising more than $8,000 and donating more than 750 hours last year, the 2008-09 campaign demonstrated the importance of giving back to the community. With even bigger service goals for this year, the 2009-10 campaign has already begun planning many exciting and rewarding events.
According to Community Service Chair, Kyle Daugherty ('10), “The class of 2010 saw the excitement and importance that our predecessors placed on giving back to the underserved members of Athens and the surrounding communities, and felt it absolutely necessary to continue their efforts. As every class is told, our goal should not be to match the efforts of previous classes, but to use their plans as a blueprint to exceed the results of past years. We know that the class of 2009 set a high bar in financial and hours of service donations, and we hope to continue their commitment to giving back so that this can become a tradition for many years to come. We are working diligently to develop a number of activities to serve the Athens are communities.”
Adding to the spirit of giving back, Morgan Staley ('10), has set community service goals of her own. Currently, Staley is training for the Columbus Marathon while raising $2,000 for the local Leukemia and Lymphoma Society chapter.
“This will be my fourth marathon, and I wanted to use my running this time around to help others. Today, nearly everyone has had a personal experience – either themselves, or with a friend, family member, or loved one – with cancer. It was for this reason that I decided to help this great cause,” Staley said.
As a part of a program called Team in Training, Staley is raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. Those in the program run in honor of individuals who are battling blood cancers.
“We are proud to have Morgan as a member of the class of 2010. She has showed constant efforts to give back to those less fortunate, and has truly represented the great tradition of the Ohio University Sports Administration program. We will do everything possible to support Morgan in her efforts to help those fighting leukemia and lymphoma,” Daugherty said.
