#OMalleyCup16 Kicks off with Cornhole Clash

Written by: Darryle Bajomo ('17)

On Thursday July 16, 2015, at Pepsi Tailgreat Park, an event of great magnitude took place. Mother Nature decided to spare the Sports Administration students another day of rain, during a record month for rainfall in Athens, by serving up a sunny 86 degree afternoon.

The first O’Malley Cup event of the 2015-2016 academic year: Corn Hole.

Cornhole Group

To the disadvantage of both classes the game which is best played with a cold beverage in hand was played without the aid of a cold can in the off hand.

Here are the round by round recaps:

Round 1:

Immanuel Kerr-Brown (IKB) & Josh Staav, 21 | Nici Ruffin & Courtney Ksiazek, 18
A hard fought match. A pair of the nicest gentlemen in the program proved to be killers in this first round matchup. Ruffin & Ksiazek were most likely shocked by the stealthy Canadian’s game & Immanuel turning in Dr. Hyde.

Brett Baur & Travis Misner, 21 | Darryle Bajomo & Michael Pelfrey, 11
I’d say the first year men ran into a buzz saw, but their putrid performance would only continue throughout the day.

Matt Meier & Nick Smith, 21 | Terrance Thomas & Aspen Echelmeier, 5
The beginning of Cornado.

Destiny Price & Karim Fathi, 21 | Kyle Kashuck & Shauna Happel, 15
Interesting matchup but the Texas dame & the Egyptian defeat the 1st years with their nimble bean bag skills.

Francesco Marini & Josh Law, 21 | Joshua Schayer & Todd Moore, 10
The Italian stallion & Law finally put an end to the 2nd years’ winning streak.

Colton Primm & Kelley Johnson, 21 | Dan Williams & Michelle Gulino, 9
Big Country & KOJO are keeping the 1st years’ dream alive.

Parker Poliakoff & James Biddick, 21 | Harrison McIntire & Drew Fuemmeler, 14
El Presidente & New Zealand’s native son went on a tikitour, but got eventually got the job done.

Becca Hemby & Kali Krisik, 21 | Mike Caviston & Grant Canning, 15
Thelma & Louise on seem to be on cornhole steroids – hard to beat.

End of Round 1: Class of 2016 Leads 5-3

Round 2:

Becca & Kali, 21 | Terrance & Aspen, 12
Thelma & Louise’s crime spree continue.

Matt Meier & Nick, 21 | Kyle & Shauna, 5
Cornado 2: Return of the Cornstars

Mike Caviston & Grant, 21 | Destiny & Karim, 7
Counting cards & step back 3’s; addiction & luck. A win is a win.

Parker & Biddick, 11 | Darryle Bajomo & Pelfrey, 0
You play to win the game. Someone missed the memo.

Harrison & Drew, 21 | Dan & Michelle, 4
Well. That escalated quickly.

Baur & Travis, 11 | Colton & Kelley, 0
Pepe le pew called. He’d like his scent back.

IKB & Staav, 21 | Schayer & Todd, 19
Lots of maple syrup flying in this matchup. Quiche for everyone! (Editors Note: Quiche? Isn't that French?)

Francesco & Josh Law, 21 | Nici Ruffin & Courtney Ksiazek, 18
In bocca al lupo is Italian for “In the mouth of the wolf”.

End of Round 2: Class of 2016 Leads 9-7

Round 3:

Matt Meier & Nick, 21 | Francesco & Josh Law, 19
The 1st years’ dynamic duo couldn’t stop the Cornado trilogy. Cornado 3: Bag & Tag

Kyle & Shauna, 21 | Dan & Michelle, 7
Good vibes, sunshine, & cow pies.

Mike & Grant, 21 | Schayer & Todd, 11
Smoking Aces. 1st years making a comeback.

Becca & Kali, 21 | IKB & Staav, 19
Thelma & Louise make the jump & live on.

Colton & Kelley, 21 | Destiny & Karim, 1
Apollo Creed vs. Ivan Drago, ‘nuff said.

Nici Ruffin & Courtney Ksiazek, 21 | Darryle Bajomo & Pelfrey, 12
Similar to the 2015 NFC Championship Game. The better team won.

Parker & Biddick, 11 | Terrance & Aspen, 0
Heat check. Déjà vu.

Baur & Travis, 21 | Harrison & Drew, 20
There can be only one.

Final Score: Class of 2016 is victorious 14-10

In the end, the 2nd year class was able to continue their dominance from the previous year. While the 1st year class was not at full strength (certain ladies who know their way around the boards were notably absent), they will have a chance at redemption during the next prestigious O’Malley event: Kickball.
