Over the winter academic break, several of our students immersed themselves in career-building activities. Read about Joseph Watkins' experience (and click on his name to read his resume).
Joseph Watkins
Over the holiday break I was fortunate to do some professional networking by meeting alumni and connecting with a former colleague of Jim Kahler. During the break I was in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area and met with Britton Spark, Corporate Partnerships – Presentation Design Coordinator/Graphic Designer at Monumental Sports and Entertainment, as well as Jim Van Stone, Chief Revenue Officer at Monumental Sports and Entertainment.
We convened to enjoy lunch in the Acelea Club at the Verizon Wireless Center. Lunch was imbued with conversation pertinent to the functioning of Monumental as well as shared stories between people who have worked for Jim Kahler. Jim Van Stone shared some morsels of advice and was very receptive to my questions regarding the industry.
Meeting Britton for the first time was a pleasure as I was greeted by a formidable mustache (a truly sublime sight) and a wide smile. Conversation with Britton centered on life after graduation and pointers to make the segue as smooth as possible.
After the lunch we migrated over to a suite to enjoy the Capitals game. The experience was especially novel for me, as it was my first NHL game. The game was riveting and conversation lessened due to the intensity of the game. The Capitals began to create some distance on the scoreboard as the game progressed and finally emerged victorious.
It was the holistic trip I had envisioned. I was able to familiarize myself with the D.C. Metro, attend my first NHL game, and spend time with tremendous alumni and hospitable senior management.
