Students Volunteer at Hall of Fame Game

Ohio U Sports Ad Hall of Fame GameOn August 3, 2014, several current students travelled to Canton, Ohio to assist with the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game.

Unlike other NFL games, the Hall of Fame Game is played in historic Fawcett Stadium, a 22,000-seat high school venue. Played annually since 1962, the Hall of Fame Game has a rich history, and this year's contest featuring the Buffalo Bills and New York Giants added to it.

Second-year student Aaron Henderson initiated the trip that had students hold a variety of roles, from credential checker to turf assistant to bust gallery attendant and more!

Josh Schayer '16 and Kali Krisik '16 set up and ran an obstacle course, hosted trivia contests, and gave away football cards to patrons in line.

Kate Broshears '15 "had the opportunity to greet and interact with guests near the wall of records, which shows each team's (both active and defunct) record throughout the history of the NFL" while also greeting people near the Super Bowl rings exhibit. She added, "it was a great chance to celebrate football's impact on people's lives and our culture as a whole."

“My favorite part was being able to talk to all of the attendants about their favorite teams and just getting to meet so many interesting fans,” recalled Colleen Oberle '16.

"The buzz around the great players from the past and the present was electrifying," said Marissa Tebeau '16.

It was so electrifying that one student's time was spent serving as a quasi security guard for some of the NFL's all-time greats. "I ensured the integrity of the perimeter around Deion Sanders, Warren Sapp, Marshall Faulk, and Michael Irving while they were broadcasting. It felt surreal to be a mere 10 feet from all-time greats and players I watched when I was younger," said Joseph Watkins '15.

Parker Hansen '16, Aaron Henderson '16, Greg Hollback '16, Kevin Hurd '16, and Todd Moore '16 highlighted their day by facilitating the private team tours for the Bills and Giants.

Becca Hemby '16 and Mike Doty '15 had exciting run-ins with Tony Dungy and Dan Marino. "Dan Marino said, 'What's up, man!' to me!" recalled Doty.

"It was truly a once in a lifetime experience to get to volunteer at the Hall of Fame,” said Mallory Glazier '16.

It was a great opportunity for our students to assist in kicking off the NFL season!
