Bolts stun Grizzlies, snatch win In Gateway

SAUGET, IL- The Windy City ThunderBolts stunned the Gateway Grizzlies, coming from behind in extra innings Wednesday night at Grizzlies Ballpark to win 5-2. 

 

The game showcased a pitching duel between Logan Schmitt and Lukas Veinbergs early in the contest that turned into a classic thriller.

 

The Grizzlies (52-33) drew first blood in the bottom of the fifth from a solo home run by DJ Stewart for a 1-0 advantage. 

 

Following a single by Jairus Richards, Richards swiped two bags and scored for a 2-0 lead via a throwing error. 

 

Windy City cut the deficit to 2-1 on an RBI double by Bren Spillane in the eighth inning.

 

In the top of the ninth, Peyton Isaacson homered in his third straight game, knotting the score 2-2.

 

Bolts RHP Carsie Walker pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless ball, and the Bolts sent the game into extra innings. 

 

Paul Coumoulos knocked his third hit of the game in the tenth inning, gaining the first Windy City lead of the night at 3-2. With two outs, Isaacson launched a two-run double, increasing the Bolts lead to 5-2.

 

Derrick Edington earned his third save of the season and Windy City became the first team to beat Gateway this season when the Grizzlies took a lead into the ninth inning (46-1).

 

Schmitt tossed 7.2 innings, surrendering one earned run on four hits while walking four and striking out eight. 

 

Veinbergs tossed a six-inning gem, surrendering no runs on two hits while walking two and striking out eight.

 

The Bolts are back in action Thursday evening in Sauget, IL for a 6:45 CT first pitch at Grizzlies Ballpark. Windy City lefty Adrian Reese (0-4, 6.15) opposes Gateway righty Parker Johnson (1-3, 4.79). The broadcast can be found at wcthunderbolts.com
