MANCHESTER, N.H. – Goals from Darik Angeli and Derek Arnold weren’t enough for the Manchester Monarchs, as the team fell, 3-2, to the Greenville Swamp Rabbits in a shootout, Sunday afternoon at the Verizon Wireless Arena.

The Monarchs (20-11-0-3) took four-of-six points in their only three match-ups against the Swamp Rabbits (17-12-5-0) this season.

“I thought we were the better team for 55 minutes tonight, but unfortunately, it’s a 60 minute game,” Head Coach Rich Seeley said. “Ultimately, we had a lapse at the end of regulation and it cost us. It’s frustrating to lose like we did, but I think the guys played hard and that’s what you hope for.”

After almost 40 scoreless minutes, the Monarchs broke through for a 1-0 lead at 19:06 in the second period. Darik Angeli netted his 4th of the season after skating in with the puck from the neutral zone off a pass from Stefan Legein. Angeli toe-dragged the puck to the top of the slot, and sent a top-shelf wrister past Greenville goaltender, Mackenzie Skapski.

The Monarchs took a 2-0 lead at 3:02 in the third period when Derek Arnold skated in on a breakaway and wristed a shot past Skapski, glove side, netting his 7th goal of the season.

The Swamp Rabbits cut the lead in half at 15:45 in the third period on a shorthanded goal by Andrew Dommett. Dommett scored his 1st of the season, beating Monarchs goaltender, Doug Carr, with a one-timer from the right hash-marks.

The Swamp Rabbits tied the game 2-2 at 18:52 with their net empty. Jordan Knackstedt netted his 7th goal of the season with a shot from the left circle, beating Carr high glove.

The game could not be settled in regulation or overtime and headed to a shootout. Knackstedt scored the only goal of the shootout, giving the Swamp Rabbits the 3-2 win.

The Monarchs return to the ice Wednesday, Jan. 6 (7 p.m.) when they begin a three-game road trip in Adirondack, playing the sixth game of the season against their division rivals.
