MANCHESTER, NH – The Manchester Monarchs rebounded from a 3-2 loss on Friday night with a 5-3 win over the St. John’s IceCaps at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Manchester (6-1-1-2) leads the Atlantic Division with 15 points.  St. John’s (3-4-1-0) ranks third in the Atlantic Division with seven points.

"We played a real strong second period,” said Monarchs Head Coach Mark Morris.  "It was a penalty filled affair, so it was tough to really get a whole lot going but the big league obviously was necessary because in the third, the penalties continued.  Those are games that aren’t that fun when you don’t get to use your whole bench.  I know there were some guys that obviously had a lot of energy and wanted to get in the game, but there were just way too many trips to the box.  We were able to come out in the end and put it out of reach.  It was great to see our guys bounce back after last night’s game.”

Center Tyler Toffoli picked up his second goal of the period, and seventh tally of the season, at 14:05 of the second frame.  From the left point, center Jordan Weal passed the puck to center Linden Vey who was at the right point.  Weal skated into the left face-off circle and received the puck back from Vey.  Weal then sent the puck to Toffoli in the slot where he redirected the pass into the net.

The Monarchs got on the board first with forward Nick Shore’s first professional goal at 1:37 in the second period.  Left wing Andy Andreoff handed the puck off to Shore in the neutral zone and then the rookie passed it over to right wing Scott Sabourin as they entered the IceCaps zone along the left wing boards.  Sabourin sent a short pass back to Shore who snapped a wrist shot from the left face-off circle five-hole on goaltender Jussi Olkinuora.

Toffoli gave the Monarchs a 2-0 lead at 8:18 of the middle period.  Toffoli took the puck through the neutral zone along the right wing.  As he entered the right wing face-off circle, he took a wrist shot that beat Olkinuora on the stick side.  Defenseman Colin Miller assisted on Toffoli’s team-leading sixth goal of the season.

The Monarchs quickly struck again at 10:11 of the period with a power play goal by Vey.  Right wing Brandon Kozun carried the puck down the right wing and passed it through traffic to Vey in the left face-off circle.  Vey snapped a wrist shot into the open net for his third goal of the season.

The IceCaps answered back in the third period when defenseman Brenden Kichton scored at 1:59.  Kichton obtained the puck from the inside corner of the right face-off circle and then skated around the Monarchs net completing the wrap around for his second goal of the season.  Center John Albert and right wing Blair Riley assisted on the IceCaps first tally of the game.

The Ice Caps struck again at 4:32 of the final frame when right wing Andrew Gordon deflected a shot from left wing Ian O’Connor, who was in the left face-off circle, past goaltender Martin Jones.

Left wing Kael Mouillierat picked up the final goal for the IceCaps.  Center Eric O’Dell battled with a Monarchs player for the puck near the center circle.  The puck popped free to Mouillierat at the right point for a one-timer that travelled through traffic and beat  Jones at 5:23 of the third for his first goal of the season.

The Monarchs finished off the IceCaps with left wing Tanner Pearson’s fifth goal of the season at 17:38 of the third period.  Defensemen Andrew Campbell passed the puck out of the IceCaps zone to Toffoli who moved the puck up through neutral zone.  Toffoli sent a pass over to Pearson who rushed into the IceCaps zone and one-timed the puck past Olkinuora.

Jones (6-1-2) earned his sixth win of the season stopping 21-of-24 shots.  Olkinuora (0-2-0) took his second loss of the season with 26 saves on 31 shots.

Manchester was 2-for-4 on the power play.  St. John’s went 1-for-8 with the man advantage.
