ROUND ROCK — IT’S A GOOD THING BASKETBALL IS AN INDOOR SPORT.

Torrential rain and historic storms hit Central Texas this weekend, but that didn’t stop over 70 teams from competing in PrimeTime’s Capital Classic at the Round Rock Sports Center.

The Round Rock Sports Center featured state-of-the-art digital scoreboards for all courts.

With nine divisions taking the court, action was nonstop, competition was fierce and teams battled for Central Texas supremacy.

One team that stood out was KTX Future.

Led by head coach Chris Ramirez, the varsity boys’ squad from Kerrville, Texas dominated, going 5-0 on the weekend.

It helps when you have a 6-foot-9 and 1/2 inch center patrolling the middle of the paint.

Luke Schultz, a sophomore at Kerrville Our Lady of the Hills (TAAPS 3A), was a monster all weekend. He averaged 14 points, 12 rebounds and 7.5 blocks a game — A big reason KTX outscored their opponents by an average of 12.25 points per game.

“This is really his first year on the scene,” Ramirez said. “He was home-schooled before this past season, so now that he’s playing summer ball he’s starting to get seen.”

Schultz played a huge part in the Championship game against Swag House, which couldn’t handle his size.

After both ‘bigs’ picked up two fouls in the first half, Ramirez sat them on the bench and went small. The result was his team being down 31-28 at halftime.

My, how the second half was different.

KTX, now with Schultz back in, started the second half with a 22-3 run, and never looked back.

Swag House was forced to take outside shots — missing 15 of 17 — and were limited to one shot, with Schultz grabbing a majority of the rebounds for KTX.

 Still, for a team to succeed, size isn’t the only thing necessary. Balance  is key.

 For KTX, a pair of talented guards — one right handed, one left handed  — do the trick.

 They happen to be twin brothers.

 Christian and Cameron Fields will be heading into their senior season  for Kerrville Tivy next year, but they hope it doesn’t stop there.

 Both players are ranked in the Texas Hoops and Rivals class of 2016,  and hope to be recruited to play college ball together. 

 “We’ve been playing together our whole lives,” said Christian.  “Everything we do, we do together. We have an edge because I know where he [Cameron] is at on the court and he knows where I am at all times.”

It must be a twin thing.

Coach Ramirez certainly isn’t complaining. 

“We haven’t played many teams that are able to stop them,” Ramirez said. “They can break presses by themselves. We can attack defenses from both sides of the court which gives us an advantage.”

Add in a shooter — for KTX that is Dillon Young — and you have yourself a championship team.

Young made 15 of the teams 42 total three-pointers on the weekend, which culminated in a comfortable 61-49 victory in the final.
