City Suffers 3-1 Defeat in Tough Road Match Lions fall to Wilmington after conceding two second half goals
Team 1 2 Final City Suffers 3-1 Defeat to Wilmington in Tough Road Match Wilmington, NC. – Orlando City SC (17-4-4, 55 points) suffered a 3-1 defeat to the Wilmington Hammerheads (8-7-9, 33 points) at Legion Stadium on Thursday night in the final match of its current three-game road trip. Midfielder Austin da Luz scored the lone goal for City to level the score-line late in the first 45, but two second-half finishes from Wilmington put the game out of reach for Orlando. After the match, Head Coach Adrian Heath commented on the 3-1 result, saying “We’re obviously disappointed with the result. We had a poor start to the match by giving them the early goal, and we conceded too many soft goals without enough scoring opportunities. That's never a good recipe, but we have a good opportunity to gain three points at home on Sunday.” The Lions found themselves behind early in the match after a turnover in the defensive third gifted Wilmington Midfielder Corbin Bone an easy opportunity. Bone took his ensuing chance well, slotting the ball past Miguel Gallardo to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage in the 3rd minute of play. Orlando pressed high up the pitch in response, with multiple players getting forward in search of an equalizer. City’s attack produced a quality opportunity to equalize midway through the first half when Rafael Ramos tore down the left-hand-side. The left-back ventured deep into Wilmington’s territory, cutting past two defenders to fire at the target, but his near-post effort was parried away by the goalkeeper. In the 40th minute, Ramos was once again involved in a dangerous attacking play for Orlando, floating a deep ball inside the box. The defender’s lofty pass found da Luz, who nodded home an unmarked header from six yards away to level the score-line. Moments before the end of the half, Molino came close to scoring his 17th goal of the season after receiving a crafty through-ball from Adama Mbengue. The Trinidadian latched on to Mbengue’s pass inside the area, but Wilmington Goalkeeper Brad Stuver was able to push it wide. City began the second half on the front-foot, creating several threatening chances in the opening minutes. After skillfully maneuvering down the left-hand-side, Mbengue provided the first clear-cut opportunity with a strong shot on target that was tipped wide for a corner. Cerén’s following set-piece was headed away by the defense to the edge of the area, landing to Estrela who volleyed a first-time strike that deflected off the Wilmington defense. Shortly afterward, Mbengue continued to cause problems for the Hammerheads backline when he drove a precise ball across the six-yard-box to da Luz, whose effort was miraculously saved by Stuver as it was halfway across the goal-line. Unfortunately, Wilmington found the back of the net one minute later when Mark-Anthony Kaye tucked away Sunny Jane’s pass inside the area. Gallardo saved Jane’s initial effort, but the midfielder was able to control the rebound and set-up Kaye for a finish. Orlando made a concerted effort to respond in the latter portion of the half with hopes of gaining points, but a stoppage time finish from Ochoa put the game out of reach for the Lions.
