Analyzing Molino's Record Goal Take a closer look at Molino's superb finish against Richmond
Kevin Molino’s finishing prowess has been on full display in 2014. After only scoring six times in the previous three seasons for the Lions, the Trinidadian midfielder has been on fire this year, bagging a USL PRO Regular Season record 16 goals with four games left to play. Molino’s 16th goal came against the Richmond Kickers this weekend in clinical fashion to give the Lions a 2-0 lead early in the second half. To take a closer look at the midfielder’s record-breaking goal, OrlandoCitySC.com breaks-down the four categories that led to Molino’s wonder-strike.
Positioning – His natural ability to position himself in between the defensive midfielders and striker helps link both lines together. For this particular goal, he’s added another presence in the box for Orlando but is still playing underneath the high-striker, placing himself in a good area to combine. Awareness – Ramos’ ball into the box was slightly out of reach for Molino, but the Midfielder was cognizant of the fact that Chin was lurking behind. His awareness of his teammate’s location around him allowed Molino to quickly spin from his marker to create separation and pounce on the lay-off. Timing – Molino’s timing was also flawless. If he arrived too quickly, he might over-run Chin’s pass. If he arrived too late, the defenders would close the window for a shot. Instead, Molino arrives at the perfect time to receive the ball in stride, setting up a prime opportunity. Finishing – Molino’s positioning, awareness and timing all played a crucial role in his superb strike. Considering the level of difficulty, this particular finish is arguably his best goal of the year. Ignoring the Kickers’ defender charging to close down the space, the midfielder precisely curls a bouncing ball into the upper-90.
