City Suffers a Tragic Defeat in the 90th Minute
After giving up a late goal, the U23s fall to 2-3-4 in the PDL

Sanford, Fla. – On Tuesday night the Orlando City U23s (2-3-4, 10 points) would suffer defeat in 90th minute after the Panama City Beach Pirates (2-4-2, 8 points) sealed a late victory off a rebound shot attempt by Defender Vitor da Silva.

In the opening minutes of the match neither team could muster enough power onto a shot to get it past the opposing team’s ‘keeper. However, in the 9th minute the visitors from Panama City Beach would strike first.

Pirates’ Midfielder Anthony Arico delivered a cross from outside the box to the far post to a lurking forward when Adin Kavara latched onto the ball and headed it square into the back of the net past Orlando’s goalie, Cody Uzcategui.

Roughly 10 minutes later, the young Lions would roar back and tie the game at 1-1 behind the finish from the club’s leading goal scorer, Forward Romario Williams. After collecting the ball at the top of the box from fellow Forward Nico Rittmeyer’s cross, the Jamaican native took a touch to create space before slotting the shot into the bottom corner past Panama’s ‘keeper Sean Lewis.

After a brief 30-minute break in the action after a lightning delay the game would resume, neither team could get back into the swing of things before the halftime whistle blew.

For the first half and hour of the second half, the game would remain stagnant with neither team really able to maintain possession until City started to gain momentum after a couple near shot attempts by second-half substitutes Tyler Blackwood, Dennis Zapata, and Lucas Diniz.

Diniz would have the closest opportunity, eight minutes after entering the game, the Brazilian native launched a shot from well outside the box that struck the left post before rolling out of play, and that would be the closest the U23s would come to try and pull ahead against Pirates.

Unfortunately for the young Lions, the visitors were bearing down on goal before an Orlando defender took down the opposing forward inches away from the penalty area. On the ensuing free kick, Panama City Beach would try to sneak the ball underneath a leaping wall, but it deflected right to da Silva who put the dagger into Head Coach Paul Shaw’s squad as his shot went into the top right corner.

City’s next match will come on the road, as they will to face off with the Pirates for a back-to-back meeting on Saturday, July 5. The U23s next home match won’t return to the Seminole Soccer Complex until Fridy, July 11 when they square off with IMG.
