Mid-season Update Orlando City has reached the halfway point of their final season as members of the USL PRO and would want nothing more than to go out the same way they came in- on top
Orlando City SC has reached the halfway point of their final season as members of the USL PRO and would want nothing more than to go out the same way they came in- on top. Already in midseason form, the Lions have been dominant though the team’s first 14 games of the 2014 campaign, trying the Club record unbeaten streak in the regular season without dropping a single point. Head Coach Adrian Heath has displayed a wonderful blend of offensive and defensive tactics that sees his squad sitting atop the table, nine points clear of the Richmond Kickers and LA Galaxy II, while outscoring the opposition by 17 goals. City’s 2014 squad is arguably one of the club’s finest rosters assembled to date, while Heath and General Manager Paul McDonough continue to keep a close eye on the future of the team in preparation for the inaugural MLS season in 2015. Five players have already been signed to MLS contracts, but City’s 2014 roster is flooded with experienced players who have had stints in MLS and competitive leagues in Europe. Midfielder Kevin Molino has always shown glimpses of being a phenomenal player in purple and white, but 2014 has easily been the 2012 USL PRO MVP’s most productive season to date. Prior to this season, the Trinidadian only had six goals to his name in three seasons with Orlando City, but the club’s first MLS signing has already produced a league-high nine goals along with five assists through 14 games played in 2014. Goalkeeper Miguel Gallardo has returned to the form he touted in 2011 and 2012 where he was the led the league in Goals Allowed, dropping his GAA back down to 0.769 to put him in second place in the category through the first part of the season to go along with four clean-sheets. And Gallardo’s job has been simplified due to a mostly impenetrable defensive unit that has only allowed two or more goals twice in all competitions through the current campaign. “For me as a goalkeeper, it’s a good feeling knowing that I have strong guys in front of me that are going to make my job easier,” said Gallardo. “The defense has really come together well and as long as they continue to make my job easier, it’s happy days for me.” The initial part of the Lions’ final run in USL PRO featured a kind and favorable schedule with City only facing an opponent sitting in the top half of the table three times, not including two MLS reserve sides. However, the second half of the season will not be as friendly to Heath and his squad. Seven of the team’s final 14 matches will be against sides with a winning record, providing an admirable test to the club seeking to hoist the USL PRO championship trophy for a third and final time.
