Phil Rawlins, Adrian Heath Experience MLS #SuperDraft First-Hand “Having a table at the SuperDraft has been a goal of mine for many years“
It was a busy week for Orlando City President Phil Rawlins and Head Coach Adrian Heath. Heath was last found down in South Florida, scouting future talent at the MLS Combine in Fort Lauderdale. Rawlins was visiting Louisville, Kentucky, as a possible home for the existing USL PRO franchise that will move in 2015 when the Lions enter MLS in 2015. But after long travels, both found themselves on the MLS SuperDraft floor Thursday morning in Philadelphia, Penn., soaking it all in one year prior to the club entering into the major leagues. “It’s an exciting time for us right now,” said Rawlins. While it was neither Rawlins’ or Heath’s first time at the SuperDraft, they both admitted there was a certain excitement to this year’s edition thanks to the club being awarded the league’s 21st expansion slot. “We’ve been to the last five out of six SuperDrafts, so we’re pretty well-educated on the process,” Rawlins added. “It’s always interesting to see the talent coming out at this level and what teams’ strategies are. It’s good for us to be involved this year because next year it will be very different. We’ll have one of those tables on the draft floor in 2015. “ On the other side of the coin, Heath is consistently evaluating talent- with the SuperDraft no exception. When asked if he was eyeing any players that were being called for draft picks, Heath said that the 2014 SuperDraft is important for prospects that may not have their named called this time around. “What we’re looking for is if someone drops through the cracks this year,“ Heath said. “People may think 2015 is far away, but in all reality it’s just a short time from now. It’s all an evaluation process for us. The exciting part is that no one really knows who’s going No. 1. except for the team in that spot. We’ll be in a similar position next year with the No. 1 or No. 2 pick.” Rawlins wrapped up his comments by saying that in the midst of all the excitement, knowing that 2015 will bring even more exhilaration is a tantalizing thing to look forward to. “Having a table at the SuperDraft has been a goal of mine for many years. Next year will be very emotional when we’re out on the draft floor making our pick. That for me will be when we’ve really arrived.“ |
