The OC 3: Lions continue to roll, PDL playoffs beginA look at this week's top three stories in the world of Orlando City
1) U23s secure playoff spot - The U23s clinched the second spot in the Southeast Division with a 3-1 win over FC Jax Destroyers last night, qualifying the Lions for postseason action in the PDL. Playoffs in the PDL are split between the four major conferences, with four teams participating in each conference championship (the Eastern is a bit different, with different standards applying for the divisions that make up that conference). The Southern Conference Championship, which Orlando qualified for last night, will be hosted by the Southeast Division champion Ocala Stampede at Trinity Catholic Stadium. The U23s will face Mid-South Division champion Laredo Heat on Friday at 5:30 p.m., with the winner facing either the Ocala Stampede or Austin Aztex on Sunday. Check back to Orlandocitysoccer.com for more previews and features on the U23 Lions as they prepare for the playoffs. 2) Lions continue to steamroll - Orlando City downed then second-place Rochester Saturday night 4-0, extending their lead in the USL PRO table to 10 points. It was the Lions second consecutive 4-0 victory in the 2012 regular season in front of a rowdy 7,260 fans at the Citrus Bowl. Here are some quick facts to look over about the Lions recent play: 1) Orlando hasn’t lost since June 2 against the Wilmington Hammerheads, 2) Since June 2, City has outscored opponents by a grand total of 19-4, 3) Out of the six wins the Lions have tallied during the span since June 2, five of those resulted in shutouts of the opposing team. Orlando will be on the road this week, facing second-place side Charleston Thursday night. The two clubs have already met in 2012, with the Lions taking the 2-1 victory over the Battery back on June 9. 3) Jersey auction a huge success - A special thank you goes out to all City fans who bid on the special edition pink jerseys. In total, the jerseys combined to raise $3,378 for Women Playing For TIME. Bids were placed on 32auctions.com, running for a little more than two weeks before ending at noon on Sunday. |
