Dear Faithful Readers,

One of the biggest takeaways from the #NSF15 was the amount of discussion on social media and attracting millennials to the stadium.  Our Case Cup case was focused on it, we had a social media workshop on Sunday and it was brought up numerous times during the Super Panels.

Getting millennials to stadiums is a problem that everyone is facing, no matter the league or venue. One of the biggest complaints that teams are hearing is that there isn’t enough wireless coverage. With the amount of fans trying to post, tweet or Snapchat their experiences it really puts a strain on the wireless network and even cell networks.

You can imagine that during the biggest sports event of the year, the Super Bowl, the Glendale Sports & Entertainment District needed to be prepared. Partnering with Crown Castle was a huge get for them as they were able to provide everyone with enough data to share and enjoy their experience.

Check it out!

PROGRAM TITLE

Crown Castle: Small Cell Solution
Crown Castle

OBJECTIVES

In today’s world you can’t go to a live event without everyone using their phones or other devices to share their experiences. With fans increasing desire to Tweet, text, and send photos and videos from live events, wireless data demand is at an all-time high. University of Phoenix Stadium is part of the Glendale Sports & Entertainment District that includes five venues—each requiring its own separate, state-of-the-art wireless network with the ability to pass off to one another seamlessly. The five venues are University of Phoenix Stadium, University of Phoenix Parking Area, Gila River Arena, Renaissance Glendale Hotel & Spa, and Westgate Entertainment District.

This solution enables wireless carriers to meet demand during the game, and will serve the venue well into the future as they continue to host major events, concerts, and conferences. Visitors need access directly before, during, and after events like the Big Game, concerts, and sporting events. Fans also want the ability to share their experiences with friends in real time and the Crown Castle network makes that possible.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Glendale Sports & Entertainment District is home to some of America’s biggest sporting events, such as the recent NFL Championship. To create the best experience for fans during major events, Crown Castle needed to accommodate all the wireless carriers and be equipped to handle up to 4 terabytes of wireless data. Accomplishing this required five separate, state-of-the-art wireless networks—all connected by fiber, and supported by existing towers and rooftops.

Due to the sheer wireless data capacity required to host an event like the NFL Championship, a fiber optic foundation was the only viable option. After installing the fiber network, we deployed a series of both indoor and outdoor small cell solution (SCS) networks. Crown Castle placed hundreds of nodes across the five venues. Each node was strategically placed to provide overlapping areas of coverage—resulting in higher bandwidth for more fans in a given area.

Crown Castle’s wireless infrastructure enables fans to stay seamlessly connected in order to send and receive messages, post pictures, access game statistics, update statuses, etc. before, during, and after the game. Crown Castle leads the industry in design, development, and execution of multi-carrier, protocol-independent SCS.

PARTNERSHIP

From media to tailgaters to fans, the Glendale Sports & Entertainment District was expecting upwards of 150,000 visitors who were predicted to consume 4 terabytes of data directly before, during, and after the NFL Championship. Crown Castle partnered with the Glendale Sports & Entertainment District because they saw an excellent opportunity to showcase their product and make a big difference in the district.

RESULTS

The Glendale Sports & Entertainment District has seen tremendous results during the Big Game alone. The game saw 28.4M+ global Tweets as well as 1.3M+ Facebook posts per minute by unique users. 87% of U.S. game-related posts were on mobile devices. Additionally, 40% of the YouTube ad and teaser views were on mobile devices.

Major carriers saw 7 TB total data usage in the Glendale Sports & Entertainment District before, during, and after the New England Patriots defeated the Seattle Seahawks. One carrier saw over 2x data usage from the 2014 Big Game, from 1.9 GB to 4.1 GB. Another carrier set a new record for data usage at any pro football game ever. The game also produced a 60% data usage spike during the Katy Perry half time show.

LOOKING AHEAD

The Big Game was, of course, the driving motivator for the upgrade, but Crown Castle built the network with the future in mind. By using a neutral host infrastructure, Crown Castle made it easy for additional wireless carriers to be accommodated without having to install separate systems. And, with the nearly limitless capacity of fiber, Crown Castle ensured that the stadium and surrounding venues will continue to be served in the future.
