Program Title: Women’s Football Huddle

Objectives: This event was designed to promote and increase the presence of the Eastern Washington University football program to the female demographic in the local Spokane, Washington community. A large portion of football fans in the local market are female, due in part to the fact that youth football is immensely popular in Spokane. Many of those women have sons participating in football and would like a better understanding of the sport they watch their sons play. The Women’s Football Huddle program recognizes that and aims to ensure their continual enjoyment of football as their child’s joy and talent for it grows.

According to EWU assistant coach Chris Peterson, the goal of the Women’s Football Huddle was to “provide a very relaxed, fun atmosphere for the participants, but at the same time teach them about football so they could come away from this event with a better understanding of exactly what happens on the field.” By providing a basic fundamental understanding of football to the women in the community and allowing them to become involved in and excited about a sport that is typically appealing to men, secures their continual support and encouragement in the future.

Program Description: Head Coach Paul Wulff and the Eastern Washington Football coaching staff held their first annual Women’s Football Huddle this past Saturday, August 11. The event was open to women 21 years of age and over. For the cost $30 per person, or a $45 Mother-Daughter Special, participants were treated to a cocktail hour, clinic presentations, t-shirt, highlight film, and a raffle ticket for several great prizes.

The actual clinics consisted of participating in walk throughs involving basic drills separated by position. Everyone had an opportunity to see what it was like to be on both the offense and defense side. A highlight video was shown, followed by a nutritional presentation on properly fueling one’s body to be its most efficient when playing. Also included was a demonstration in which members of the EWU team displayed the football uniform and protective equipment.

Northern Quest CasinoPartner: Eastern Washington University partnered with Northern Quest Casino to put on this promotion. Northern Quest Casino provided the facilities wherein the clinics took place.

Media: The medium used to advertise this promotion was an internet posted press release flyer that was available through Eastern Washington’s athletic website.

Results: The women left with a much better understanding and a newly acquired enthusiasm for football as a result of the event. With the knowledge they gained, the women were looking forward to the upcoming football season and being able to watch and understand the games. To capitalize on this, EWU presented each participant with complimentary tickets to the first home game of the 2007 season.

Looking Ahead:
The Eagles plan to make the Women’s Football Huddle program an annual event and continue to build on the solid foundation they build this year.
