Worcester Stung Twice in Double Header

New Britain, CT -  Despite locking in a playoff spot, Worcester was swept in the double header on Monday against the New Britain Bees, losing 6-3 and 7-0.

Brimfield native and Worcester Academy Graduate Matt Shaw (Maryland) picked up right where he left off  for Worcester with a home run to lead off game one. With the first inning long ball, Shaw broke the Bravehearts record for most consecutive games with a home run (4). Shaw continued in the seventh with another solo home run, his sixth in six days.

In the bottom of the first, it was Shaw again coming up big, robbing a two run home run by crashing into the wall in left-center field. During his second at-bat, Shaw doubled and scored on a Ben Rice (Dartmouth) triple.

The Bees struck big in the fifth with five runs, highlighted by a grand slam by Matthew Donlan (Stonehill) to take a 6-2 lead. Despite Shaw’s two home-run performance the Bees would take game one 6-3.

Donlan also got the first RBI of the game in game two with an RBI single bringing in Griffin Arnone (Elon) on the way to a 7-0 New Britain win. Arnone also hit a two run home run later in the game to add some insurance for New Britain.

The Bravehearts, despite the losses, will play in the Championship Series starting on Thursday, August 20th against the Nashua Silver Knights. Worcester needs one more win or one Nashua loss to clinch the one seed. Before that series, they have a two-game home-stand to end the regular season starting with a game tomorrow night against Brockton at Doyle Field. First pitch will be at 6pm.
