Hearts Squash Bees' Comeback Attempt

Leominster, MA- The Worcester Bravehearts continued their undefeated season at Doyle Field with a 10-9 win Sunday over the New Britain Bees.

Back-to-back sacrifice flies in the bottom of the seventh scored Aidan Wilde (Stonehill) and Tyler Patane (Frankin Pierce) and gave Worcester a 10-9 lead that they would not surrender.

The win for the Bravehearts was their third straight, moving them to 9-4 on the season. New Britain slips to 3-10.

With two down in the first, Worcester began a rally. A walk by EJ Exposito (NYIT), followed by a Wilde infield hit and a Patane walk allowed Jack Gardner (Morehead State) to single home Exposito. Wilde scored when Andrew Selima (Holy Cross) walked. Joseph Pesce (NYIT) proceeded to make it 6-0 with a grand slam that scored himself, Patane, Gardner, and Selima.

New Britain responded in the second with two runs on a two-RBI single by Ryan Bagdasarian that scored Mike Caruso and Derek Tenney, and another run in the top of the third when Andrew Cain drove Danniel Riviera in on an RBI single.

The Bravehearts added insurance in the bottom of the inning when Patane hit a two-run home run to make the score 8-3.

New Britain cut the lead to three when Zach Donohue hit a two-run home run in the fourth that also scored Bagdasarian. In the sixth, Rivera hit a two-run home run to cut the lead to one, scoring Bagdasarian. The Bees took the lead the next inning on another two-run home run by Tenney that made the score 9-8 before Worcester scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to pull ahead.

Luke Fox (Holy Cross) earned the win for Worcester. He went one inning, giving up two runs on two hits while striking out the side. Former Braveheart Joe Mancini took the loss for New Britain. In four innings pitched, he gave up two runs on six hits while striking out two. The save went to Brad Marchetti (Tufts), who pitched a scoreless ninth, walking two and striking out one.

The Bravehearts have an off-day Monday before returning home to Doyle Field Tuesday against the Nashua Silver Knights. First pitch is set for 6:00.
