Worcester Sweeps Doubleheader Against Nashua

Worcester, MA – Worcester and Nashua were scheduled to play a game in mid-June before Mother Nature forced a postponement. The two teams played a doubleheader on Friday night, and with Worcester winners of seven games in a row, the Silver Knights caught the Bravehearts at a bad time.

Worcester took both games of the doubleheader – a 7-2 final in game one and a 3-1 final in game two – as the Bravehearts extended their winning streak to nine games in a row.

Nashua (13-28) got on the board first in game one. Back-to-back singles in the second inning from Jake Lebel and Ryan Berardino started things off. Worcester starter Henry Ennen forced a double play, but Luke Tyree followed with an RBI-single.

Worcester (26-14) responded in the fourth with two runs thanks to a Dustin Harris RBI-double and an Edward Haus RBI-single. Michael Dellicarri and Mack Cheli started the inning with back-to-back singles.

Worcester broke it open in the sixth inning. Jon Hansen walked with the bases loaded for an RBI, Joseph Pesce ripped a two-run double, Idelson Taveras singled home a run, and Cheli brought a run home on a sacrifice fly.

Ennen lasted five innings, allowed five hits and one run, walked three and struck out three. Mike White lasted four innings for the Silver Knights, allowed six hits and two runs, and struck out six.

In game two, Makenzie Stills dominated the Nashua hitters. The soon-to-be Vanderbilt righty pitched seven innings, allowed just one run and two hits, and struck out six. Silver Knights’ starter Casey Candiotti threw five innings, allowed two runs (one earned), walked four, and struck out just one Braveheart.

Worcester scored one run in each of the second and third innings. In the second, Worcester loaded the bases and Chris Rinaldi walked to bring home Brett Coffel, who singled to start the inning. In the third, Haus led off with a single and later came around to score on a Kirk Sidwell single.
Nashua cut the deficit in half in the fourth inning. Austin White singled, and he later scored on two throwing errors from the Bravehearts’ infielders. Worcester, however, added an insurance run in the sixth when Sidwell doubled and eventually scored on a single off the bat of Rinaldi.

Due to the doubleheader, the teams played two seven inning games at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field. Worcester improves to 5-1 versus Nashua this season. The Bravehearts are back in action tomorrow at home against Pittsfield. First pitch is at 7.
