Potters Split Bay Area DoubleheaderSunday, the Potters traveled 76 miles from McBean Stadium to Solano College for a doubleheader with the Bay Area Admirals. The Potters recently swept a two-game series with the West Coast Kings and entrusted JoJo Villareal (Grambling State University) with his first season start in game one in the Bay. The Potters and Admirals failed to score in the first, but former Potter, Jack Grant (University of Arizona) singled off Villareal. On the day, Grant went 2/6 with 2 RBI in his first two games with the Admirals. The Potters got the scoring started in the top of the second inning when Patrick Herrera (University of Kentucky) drove in Payton Brennan (UCLA). Brennan has scored in all four games he has played with the Potters this season. Luke Lavin (Stanford University) scored later in the inning on a fielder’s choice. Logan Bell (Bowling Green State University) relieved Villareal after another scoreless inning. Bell struck out five in only two innings but allowed a solo home run in the fourth cutting the Potters’ lead to one. Payton Brennan drove in Ben Higdon (University of Kentucky) in the fifth, but the Admirals’ bats truly woke up in the bottom of the inning. They took the lead on a three-run bomb hit by Chase Graves and then added two more to put the game out of reach for the Potters who failed to score a run for the rest of the contest. The Admirals won game one by a final score of 6-2. The Potters hadn’t lost back-to-back games since getting swept by the Healdsburg Prune Packers in early June. With that streak on the line, the Potters looked to Gabe Maya (Loyola Marymount University) to make his second start of the season. After another scoreless first from both teams, the Potters once again got the scoring started in the top of the second inning. Chase Weissenborn (University of New Mexico) drove in two runs on a bases-loaded single after sitting for the entirety of the first game. Payton Brennan extended his streak with a run in every game this year, scoring one of the Potters’ two runs in the third inning. Leading by five in the fourth, Zach Chamizo (UC Riverside) hit his second triple this season, driving in two more runs. With the lead now at seven, Grant Kelly (College of Southern Nevada) returned to the mound in the fourth after entering the inning prior. Kelly allowed a pair of runs but still lead by a score of 7-2. The Potters scored five more runs in the final three innings including a Justin Olson (Austin Peay University) home run in the sixth. Olson has now homered in three of the Potters’ last seven games and leads the team in home runs on the season. Devin Marton (University of Nevada) and Max Manning (UC Davis) each threw a scoreless inning in relief to finalize the Potters’ 12-2 victory over the Bay Area Admirals in game two of the doubleheader. The Potters are back at home on Tuesday to take on the Sonoma Stompers. In their first league series of the season, the Potters took on the Stompers where they beat them three out of four games, outscoring them by 21 throughout the series. |
