Potters top Mudcats on Disney Night

On Saturday, the 10-8 Lincoln Potters took on the 2-9 Solano Mudcats on Disney Night at McBean Park. Peyton Stumbo (University of Nevada) tossed seven scoreless innings on Friday night, leading the Potters to a win in game one of the four-game set.

Looking to pick up where Stumbo left off, Tyler Stewart (Sacramento State University) toed the rubber for the Potters tonight. Stewart made his way through the first inning with relative ease, only allowing one base runner.

The Potters were looking to stay hot offensively after scoring five runs in the first three innings in game one of the series. On Mudcats’ starting pitcher Chase Banks’ first pitch of the game, Zach Chamizo (UC Riverside) ripped a double into the left-center gap. Ben Higdon (University of Kentucky) would eventually bring Chamizo home along with Brandon Forrester (Oregon State) who reached on an error by the Mudcats’ shortstop.

Stewart continued pitching well through the second and third inning, escaping jams with runners in scoring position in both. Brandon Forrester would eventually strike again in the third inning after stealing home for the second time this series. In only two games this season, Forrester has already stolen three bases and scored five runs, making an immediate impact on a team that undoubtedly was looking for an offensive spark.

The Potters scored again in the fourth inning, which also marked the conclusion of Tyler Stewart’s night after his pitch count exceeded 70. Despite the high pitch count, Stewart had pitched well enough to put him in line for the win, as four innings is the minimum amount required to record a win in the CCL.

He was relieved by Justin Still (University of New Mexico) who built on Stewart’s four scoreless innings with two of his own. Sebastian Kirchner (University of New Mexico) relieved his college teammate in the seventh inning, putting up another scoreless frame for the Potters’ pitching staff.

The Potters would restart the scoring following the seventh-inning stretch. Ben Romano (Tulane University) brought home Ben Higdon and Chase Jans (University of Kansas) with a hard-hit single, pushing the Potters’ lead to six.

Logan Bell (Bowling Green State University) entered the game in the eighth. This was Bell’s seventh relief outing of the season, leading the Potters. For the second game in a row, the Potters held the Mudcats scoreless through the first eight innings.

Unfortunately, the Mudcats’ bats woke up in the ninth inning again as Luke Piazza plated two with a one-out double into the gap. Bell eventually settled down, retiring the final two Mudcats with little trouble.

On Father's Day Sunday, the Potters travel to Solano for a doubleheader with the Mudcats and a chance to sweep their first series since the Menlo Park Legends in early June.
