(August 25, 2019 – High Point, NC): The York Revolution offense exploded for six runs in the top of the ninth inning, stealing a big 9-5 come-from-behind victory over the High Point Rockers on Sunday afternoon at BB&T Point. The win improves the Revs’ second half record to 25-18 as they avoid a series sweep and remain one game in front of Sugar Land for first place, heading home to open a huge four-game series against the Skeeters on Monday at 6:30 p.m.
Trailing all day, the Revs entered the top of the ninth inning down 5-3 and 0-43 when trailing after eight innings on the season. The Revs quickly went to work on the rally as Melky Mesa, Angelys Nina, and Ryan Dent all singled to load the bases with no outs. Zach Sullivan followed with an RBI single to center, bringing the Revs within 5-4 with still no outs and chasing reliever Trevor Frank. Justin Trapp was the first to face lefty Chase Huchingson and chopped a grounder to short on which Nina beat Michael Russell’s throw to the plate, tying the game at 5-5. Welington Dotel capped a 4-for-4 day and an 8-for-12 series by bouncing a go-ahead RBI infield hit on the right side of the infield for his sixth RBI of the series, and Telvin Nash cleared the bases with a three-run double to right-center, as the Revs surged ahead, 9-5.
Jameson McGrane took care of business with a 1-2-3 ninth to close out a sensational effort from the Revs bullpen which worked 5.1 innings of scoreless one-hit ball.
York trailed from the first inning-on as High Point plated the game’s first run on a Hector Gomez fielder’s choice grounder. The Rockers built their lead to 4-0 with three runs in the second, coming on a Myles Schroder RBI double down the right field line and a two-run single to right by Stephen Cardullo.
The Revs battled back with three of their own in the top of the third. Sullivan ignited things with a single to right to start the frame and scored on a Dotel single up the middle for York’s first run. Nash singled to keep the line moving, and Isaias Tejeda ripped an RBI double down the left field line to further cut into the deficit. Carlos Franco brought home one more with a ground ball to first as the Revs clawed within 4-3.
High Point got one back as Quincy Latimore came home on a wild pitch in the bottom of the third after reaching on a double, but Revs pitchers limited the Rockers to just one hit the rest of the day.
Neither team scored until the ninth as the Revs were also stifled offensively through the middle innings. York mounted a threat against Frank with one out in the eighth on a walk to Dotel and singles by Nash and Tejeda to load the bases. Frank induced a double play to escape that jam, but the Revs secured their 23rd comeback win and seventh last at-bat victory of the season an inning later.
Robert Carson (4-0) earned the win with a perfect eighth out of the Revs bullpen. That followed scoreless outings from Phil Walby, Orleny Quiroz, and Julio Perez who were all part of the airtight relief effort.
Notes: Nash now has 215 RBI in his Revs career, moving ahead of Ramon Castro (214) for second in Revs history. York finishes the regular season 3-7 at BB&T Point, winning the finale to avoid a sweep all three times. The six-run ninth came within one run of the biggest ninth inning in club history. The Revs tied a season-high with three stolen bases as a team, doing so for the first time since June 30.
