(May 20, 2017 – Sugar Land, TX):  After dropping the opening game of Saturday’s day-night doubleheader, 8-7, the York Revolution rebounded in a big way, scoring seven times in the third inning en route to a 10-5 victory over the Sugar Land Skeeters in the nightcap at Constellation Field.  The Revs have won three of their last four, and will close their seven-game road trip on Sunday afternoon before returning home for a 10-game homestand that begins Monday evening.

 

In the opener, York jumped to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, thanks to a two-run single to center by Travis Witherspoon and an RBI single to left-center by Derrick Robinson, all with two outs.

 

Sugar Land responded right away, scoring three in its half of the first.  After a pair of leadoff walks, Jeremy Barfield ripped an RBI single to center, Andy Wilkins grounded a run-scoring single to right, and Kevin Ahrens tied the game at 3-3 on a groundout.

 

Carlos Triunfel chopped a two-run double down the third base line to give York a 5-3 lead in the third, but Sugar Land would answer again as Barfield launched a leadoff homer to left in the home half of the inning.

Jared Mitchell broke a 0-for-27 skid with a double to right-center in the fourth and scored when Jose Constanza lashed a single off the glove of reliever Cameron Stanton and into right-center, expanding the lead to 6-4.

Sugar Land would answer for the third time by scoring in the same inning when Derek Miller reached on a bunt single and circled the bases on a pair of throwing errors.

 

The Skeeters completed the comeback with three runs in the fifth, as Lance Zawadzki cracked a go-ahead two-run double to right-center and Miller followed with his own RBI double to left-center.

 

York made it a one-run game when Luis Cruz came home on a double play in the sixth, but the Skeeters would hang on for the 8-7 win.

 

Following the early game loss in the seven-inning contest, the Revs got off on the right foot by scoring in the first inning in the nightcap.  Constanza set the tone, reaching on a leadoff error, immediately stealing second, advancing to third on a deep fly ball by Ryan Dent, and sprinting home on a sac fly from Isaias Tejeda.

 

Sugar Land tied the game an inning later, opening the inning with three consecutive singles as Albert Cordero drove in the equalizer.  Revs starter Frank Gailey settled things down, however, with a double play and another ground out, avoiding a big inning.

 

The Revs would piece together a monstrous inning in the third, tying their biggest inning of the season with seven runs for an 8-1 lead.  Dent led off the frame with a single up the middle before advancing on a groundout.  Dent took third on a wild pitch on ball four to Joel Guzman, and then raced home on another wild pitch to give York a 2-1 lead.  Guzman moved to third on yet another wild pitch, prompting an intention walk to Angel Franco.  Witherspoon and Bryan Pounds followed with RBI singles to left field, and Robinson added on with a two-run double to left-center.  Mitchell then lined an RBI double to right and scored when Constanza smacked a single to left.

 

Gailey notched two quick outs in the bottom of the third, but the Skeeters launched another rally, scoring three times on four hits including an RBI single by Ahrens and a two-run knock up the middle by Cordero.  An Ahrens RBI double in the fifth cut York’s lead to 8-5, but with a runner at second and no outs, Gailey turned the momentum by inducing a fielder’s choice with Ahrens thrown out trying to take third, and then retiring Cordero on a double play grounder, his fourth rolled in five innings.

The Revs would tack on runs in the sixth on a Witherspoon double, and in the eighth on a Franco single for the 10-5 win.

 

Gailey (5-1) picked up his league-leading fifth win.  After allowing one run or fewer in four of his first five starts, Gailey was touched for five runs on 10 hits, but came up huge with four double plays, before turning it over to the bullpen.  Luke Westphal handled a scoreless sixth and seventh, Michael Click struck out the side in the eighth, and Chase Huchingson finished it off in the ninth.

 

Both teams tallied 13 hits.  Sugar Land committed six errors, tying the most in a game by an opponent in Revs history.

 

Notes: Mitchell’s fourth-inning double in game one snapped a 0-for-27 skid, and kicked off a stretch of four consecutive hits including three doubles for the York right fielder.  York’s seven-run inning matched a season best set on April 27 at Southern Maryland.  The Revs have now scored three runs or more in an inning five times in the last four games.  The Revs have scored 31 runs over the last four contests.  Huchingson allowed his first hit in eight appearances, but finished his ninth consecutive outing without allowing an earned run to begin the season.  York righty Steve Janas (1-3, 5.32) faces Sugar Land’s Jake Hale (3-1, 2.36) on Sunday at 3:05 p.m. ET.  Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, woyk1350.com, and on the WOYK app beginning at 2:45 p.m. ET with Darrell Henry on the call.
