(August 16, 2018) - The York Revolution pitching staff responded to early run support to shut down the New Britain Bees, 5-2 in front of 4,094 fans at PeoplesBank Park on Thursday Night.

 

The Revs got the offensive going early as Henry Castillo smacked an opposite-field infield single for the team's first hit in the bottom of the first. After a Melky Mesa fielder's choice groundout, first baseman Telvin Nash crushed a two-run homer to straight away center field off of Bees starter Devin Burke to give the Revs a 2-0 lead.

 

Troy Terzi, who was signed as an undrafted free agent earlier in the day, graced the Atlantic League by striking out two of the first three Bees he faced in a perfect first inning of work.

 

Michael Burgess Sr. worked his first of two walks for the game in the bottom of the second inning. He was advanced on a ground ball fielder’s choice off the bat of Jared Mitchell and was promptly driven in by Ryan Dent, who smashed a double off of the top of the Arch Nemesis in left for a 3-0 lead.

 

The early run support was enough for Terzi, as he cruised through the game's first three innings. He allowed only one hit and one walk while striking out four. He was lifted to start the fourth and replaced by Jailen Peguero.

 

After retiring the first two batters of the fourth inning, Peguero hit left fielder Matt Tuiasosopo on the elbow with a two strike pitch to keep the inning alive. That proved to be costly as Jovan Rosa smashed a Peguero breaking ball deep over the Nemesis and onto Arch Street to cut the lead to one.

 

The Revs bullpen was fantastic following the Rosa homer. James Pugliese, Jay Gause, and Michael Click all recorded multiple strikeouts while combining to allow no runs on just three hits from the fourth through seventh innings.

 

The Revs’ bats came alive again in the seventh. Roger Diaz hit a sharp line drive to right field to become the team’s first base runner of the inning with one out. Alonzo Harris followed Diaz by working a one-out walk. Castillo earned his second hit of the game by hitting a liner down the left field line that went all the way to the wall. Diaz scored easily on the play, but Harris was thrown out at the plate. Castillo advanced to third on the throw setting up Mesa who blasted an RBI single off of the very top of the Nemesis, scoring Castillo and driving the lead to 5-2.

 

The eighth inning was turned over to Joe Van Meter, who was perfect aside from a two out walk that he left stranded.

 

Jared Mitchell smashed a double in the bottom of the inning, but was left stranded when Dent hit a bullet right at Bees center fielder Darren Ford for the third out.

 

Ricardo Gomez was called upon to close the game in the top of the ninth. He started the frame by striking out Rosa. After a long flyout from James Skelton, Gomez recorded the final out by striking out Galvez looking.

 

The Revs improve to 17-18 in the second half and 49-49 on the year, winning two of three in the series.

 

Notes: York's 14 strike outs fell one shy of matching a season-high (15 on May 26 vs. Road Warriors). Gause, the team's Opening Night starter, struck out his first two batters faced, pitching in relief in the sixth inning in his first appearance in exactly two months, returning from injury. Gomez' save was his first of the year and 25th of his Revs career, fourth-most all-time. It was also the 35th save of his Atlantic League career and 98th of his pro career. Nash's home run gives him seven long balls and 16 RBI in just 13 games with York this season; the homer was the 51st of his Revs career, third-most in club history, and the 33rd of his career at PeoplesBank Park, second-most in stadium history. Mesa's seventh inning RBI was his 16th in his last 12 games and team-leading 60th of the season, his highest total since 2012 when he totaled 67 in the minors and finished the season in the big leagues with the New York Yankees. Dent's RBI gives him an even 40 on the season, making him the fourth player on the team to reach 40 RBI on the year. The Revs open a three-game series at Somerset on Friday at 7:05 p.m. with lefty Logan Williamson facing Patriots right-hander Kyle Davies.
