REVS DENIED IN BID FOR SWEEP

(May 27, 2018) -- The York Revolution had the winning run at the plate with two outs in the ninth, but fell 4-3 to the Road Warriors Sunday afternoon at PeoplesBank Park. The Revs did come away with a series win after winning each of the first two games.  After an off-day on Memorial Day, the homestand continues when the Revs host the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs on Tuesday night.

The Road Warriors scored first on Anthony Ray’s two-out, two-RBI single to right field in the top of the second off Revs starter Mitch Atkins. The hit came on a 3-2 pitch with the bases loaded that Ray dropped in front of Jared Mitchell in right to make it 2-0 Road Warriors.

The Revs got a run back in the third when Welington Dotel plated Tyler Clark with an RBI single up the middle off Road Warriors starter Giovanni Soto, cutting the deficit to 2-1. The hit extended Dotel’s hitting streak to 10 games and his RBI streak to five.

After Atkins worked through a 1-2-3 top of the sixth, the Revs did some damage in the bottom half. After Melky Mesa and Jose Cuevas both singled to set up first-and-third with no-outs, Michael Burgess hit a ground ball to shortstop on which Osvaldo Martinez threw home to cut down Mesa at the plate. But with runners on first and second and one out, Travis Witherspoon singled up the middle to tie the game, and Rubi Silva followed with a go-ahead RBI single to right to give the Revs a 3-2 lead.

Atkins’ day was done after six innings, allowing just two runs on three hits, with a season-high six strikeouts and a pair of walks. Atkins retired the Road Warriors in order four times and left in line for the win. He set down 13 of his final 14 batters faced, allowing just one baserunner over his final four innings.

Luke Westphal came on to pitch the seventh for the Revs and allowed a one-out game-tying homer to Alfredo Silverio to left field, evening the score at 3-3.

Ricardo Gomez pitched the eighth for the Revs, and after allowing three straight singles to load the bases, gave up the go-ahead run on a Geraldo Valentin RBI fielder’s choice to make it 4-3 Road Warriors.

That score held the rest of the way as Andrew Johnston entered to get Dotel, the winning run, to hit into a fielder’s choice to end the game, notching a one-pitch save.

Luis Cruz (1-0) claimed the win in relief for the Road Warriors while Gomez (0-1) suffered the loss for the Revs.

The Revs (13-12) are off Monday before opening a three-game series with the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at PeoplesBank Park.  York righty Dominic Severino (2-1, 2.57) gets the ball in the opener.  It is a WellSpan Sports Medicine Silver Sluggers Tuesday.  Tickets are on sale at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the Revs Ticket Office.

Notes: Westphal was charged with a blown save, only the Revs' fourth of the season and third in a loss; three of the four, and all three that have occurred in losses have come against the Road Warriors.  It was the first by the Revs bullpen since May 9 at Southern Maryland, and first in a loss since May 2 vs. the Road Warriors.  York is now 3-3 against the Road Warriors on the season.
