(May 13th, 2018) -- It was a dreary Sunday for the York Revolution in more ways than one as they lost both games of their doubleheader (both seven-inning games) with the New Britain Bees on a rainy afternoon-turned-evening at PeoplesBank Park. York dropped a heartbreaker, 3-2 in 11 innings in the opener before being silenced 6-0 in a rain-shortened six-inning contest in the nightcap.
The Bees scored first in Game 1. Darren Ford doubled to lead off the game and later came across on Reid Brignac’s RBI grounder to go up 1-0 against Revs starter Jay Gause.
The Revs answered in the bottom of the frame on Travis Witherspoon’s solo homer over the Arch Nemesis in left field, his first of the season, tying the game at 1-1.
In the fourth, Zach Wilson doubled to lead off the inning and later scored on Michael Burgess’ RBI single to left field to make it 2-1 Revs.
With the Revs still up 2-1 in the top of the seventh, Gause allowed a leadoff home run to Deibinson Romero to tie the game. He struck out Brignac after the homer before giving way to Junior Rincon out of the bullpen.
Gause worked 6.1 innings, his longest start of the season, and gave up just the two runs on four hits with four strikeouts, settling for a no-decision
Rincon finished the seventh, and Robert Carson followed with 3.1 solid innings as the game went deep into extras, but gave up a solo homer to Ford in the top of the 11th which gave the Bees a 3-2 lead. New Britain held on for the win as the Revs went down quietly in the bottom of the 11th.
Manny Delcarmen (2-1) earned the win in relief for the Bees after pitching a scoreless tenth inning. Carson (2-1) suffered the loss despite pitching well, charged with just his second run allowed on the season. Kevin Chapman struck out the side to earn the save, his second of the season.
Game 2 featured Ross Detwiler on the mound for the Revs, matching the Bees’ Kyle Simon with three scoreless innings.
The Bees put up a five-spot in the top of the fourth, sending ten men to the plate as weather conditions worsened. The first run came across on an error when second baseman Rubi Silva mishandled a pop up. With two outs, Manny Ramirez Jr. ripped an RBI single, and Vinny Siena cleared the bases with a two-run double, as another run crossed on an error in the outfield. Detwiler was charged with all five runs, despite only one being earned.
A 45-minute rain delay stopped play with two outs in the top of the fourth, and when play resumed, Zac Treece took over to finish the inning. Treece allowed an unearned run in the fifth on an errant flip to first as he attempted to recover from a Ramirez base hit that ricocheted off his leg. Treece struck out the side in the fifth, as all four of his outs came on strikeouts.
Grant Sides made his season debut with a 1-2-3 sixth inning, with skies again opening as the final out was recorded. The game was officially called and ruled final after five and a half innings, with the Bees winning 6-0. The Revs managed only one hit in the rain-shortened loss, a Zach Wilson double in the second inning.
Detwiler (1-1) suffered the loss while Simon (2-1) earned the five-inning complete-game win, striking out seven for the game including five consecutive batters in the fourth and fifth.
The Revs have an off day on Monday before opening a three-game home series with the Somerset Patriots on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. It is Northeastern School District Night presented by Harrisburg University and Trivia Night presented by Showtime Trivia. Notes: The doubleheader began after a rain delay of one hour and 44 minutes at the outset, two minutes shy of being a top-ten longest rain delay in Revs history. The 11-inning opener marked the Revs' first extra-inning game of the season. The opener was the Revs' third straight one-run game; York falls to 4-2 in one-run games on the season. The loss snapped the Revs' four-game winning streak, while New Britain ended its three-game losing streak. Revs catcher Tyler Clark threw out three runners attempting to steal in game one, including Brignac twice. Witherspoon's homer in the opener extended his hitting streak to a Revs' season-best eight consecutive games. York was victimized by stranding 11 runners in game one, including leaving the bases loaded in back-to-back innings in the fourth and fifth. The Revs fall to 8-7 on the season, 0-4 in doubleheader contests. York slips to 2.0 games behind Sugar Land and Lancaster in the Freedom Division standings.
