WOYK’S RUMAN RETIRES

(November 30, 2017) — Longtime WOYK high school football and basketball play-by-play announcer Ron Ruman has retired from his position as the voice of York-Adams League sports, the station announced today. Ruman concludes his play-by-play career on WOYK after 18 seasons and well over 900 games.

“WOYK would not be where it is today as the area’s home for local sports coverage without Ron’s years of dedication,” said WOYK General Manager Darrell Henry. “Ron helped establish our proud tradition of broadcasting local sports and did so with great knowledge, preparation, and dedication to promoting our local teams. His years of commitment are greatly appreciated.”

Ruman began calling high school games on WOYK in 1999, launching a career that made him the voice of numerous league, district, and state championship runs for local teams. The Penn State alumnus has also been a regular contributor to “Central PA Gameday” and a host of daily Penn State football updates on WOYK.

“I met many fine people over 18 years of calling high school football and basketball games,” stated Ruman. “It’s been an honor to be part of many memorable York County high school sports moments, and these are memories I will carry with me always.

“I want to thank WOYK for this opportunity. Since taking over, the York Revolution and General Manager Darrell Henry have made WOYK a first-class sports radio station. In today’s media landscape, York County residents have a rarity with a locally owned operation committed to covering local sports.

“My gratitude toward several individuals must be noted. Steve Pugliano, our longtime account executive who built partnerships to make the broadcasts possible. Producer Jim Hardin, who was ‘always pushing all the right buttons back at the station.’ And my partners over the years, Annette Boyer, Wayne McCullough, Andy Bria, and Gareth Hissong. All of these people I am now privileged to call friends.”

Henry, who handles play-by-play for York Revolution baseball and York College basketball and has previously called high school sports for WOYK, will take over the lead role in SportsRadio 1350’s high school sports coverage. He’ll join Bria on WOYK’s first High School Basketball Game of the Week broadcast, presented by WellSpan Sports Medicine, on December 12, when Dallastown visits Central York.

Longtime WOYK broadcaster Ray Jensen will also handle game broadcasts. The Red Lion High School and York College grad returns to York after spending the 2017 season working in the Tampa Bay Rays broadcasting department and has previously called York Revolution and York College games on WOYK and served as Revolution public address announcer.
