For the second time in three nights, the York Revolution scored 11 runs, this time downing the Somerset Patriots 11-3 on Wednesday night in front of 3,958 at PeoplesBank Park. Having won the first three games of the series, the Revs go for a four-game sweep on Thursday night.
The Patriots struck first as Carlos Guzman led off the game with a single and came around to score on a Mark Minicozzi RBI groundout as the visitors jumped ahead 1-0.
The Somerset lead was the first of the series and it did not last long. Alonzo Harris walked to lead off the home first and scored three batters later on a Telvin Nash groundout to tie the score at 1-1.
Ryan Dent reached on an infield single in the second, and this time it was Harris picking up the RBI, coming through with a two out single to left-center to give the Revs a 2-1 lead.
The Revs continued to produce at the plate with two outs in the third. Michael Burgess singled and Luis Cruz doubled down the left field line, setting up Dent who bounced a single up the middle, scoring two, to extend the lead to 4-1.
Somerset would plate an unearned run in the fifth against Revs starter Steve Janas, who committed the error on a pickoff throw to first to allow Justin Pacchioli to advance to second, before two productive outs brought him home, making it 4-2.
For the second straight night the Revs would blow it open in the fifth. York strung together five straight hits to begin the frame, chasing Somerset starter Will Oliver (5-5) from the contest. It began with a Mitchell single before Nash blasted an RBI double to deep center. Burgess reached on a single to right before Luis Cruz greeted reliever Keith Hessler with a first pitch single to center to score another run. Dent came through again with a double to deep right to bring in Burgess, and later in the inning Travis Witherspoon lifted a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Cruz, making it 8-2 York.
Somerset would get one run back in the sixth. Minicozzi lined a pitch off the bare hand of Janas to reach on a single with one away. Janas would stay in the game, but allowed two more singles following a strikeout, one of which scored a run. York manager Mark Mason turned to reliever Michael Click who hit Pacchioli to load the bases, but bounced back to get Guzman on strikes to escape the jam and preserve the 8-3 lead.
Janas (5-5) earned his fourth consecutive win, giving up two earned runs over 5.2 innings, as the Revs have now won his last six starts. Three of Janas’ wins have come against Somerset.
The Revs offense wasn’t done, tacking on three more runs in their eighth on their second five-hit frame of the night. Witherspoon led off with a single through the left side and Harris followed suit. Two batters later, Mitchell doubled down the right field line to bring home both runs to pad the cushion at 10-3. Burgess capped off the effort later in the inning with an RBI double off the base of the wall in right center to push it to 11-3.
The Patriots loaded the bases in three of the final four innings, but each time the Revs bullpen escaped, stranding 14 Somerset runners on the night.
The Revs are now a perfect 6-0 at home against the Patriots, and look to go for the four-game sweep Thursday night when Logan Williamson (5-8, 5.11) faces off with Lucas Irvine (8-3, 3.76). Mitchell has now reached base in 28 consecutive home games, the longest active streak in the Atlantic League and 5th longest stretch in Revs history. Nash drove in two runs, and now has seven RBI in the series, and 25 driven in over 25 games played this season. Eight Revs recorded hits, and five had multi-hit games. The Revs are outscoring the Patriots 29-5 in the series, and 40-11 overall at home this season.
